‘Are You Ready? I Am’: Edward Johnston’s Reported Last Words

'Are You Ready? I Am': Edward Johnston's Reported Last Words

Edward William Johnston, a 50-year-old Irish man, was shot dead by police after a three-hour standoff.

According to sources informing Times of Malta, his final words, captured on bodycam footage, were: “Are you ready? Because I am.” Johnston had pointed a replica gun at police, leading them to believe he was about to fire.

Police shot him three times, as they believed his gesture and words indicated an imminent threat, especially after they were informed he had just killed his ex-partner, Nicolette Ghirxi, who was found stabbed to death.

Johnston’s actions and movements on the night of the incident suggest he may have been seeking “suicide by cop.”

Times of Malta revealed that earlier he had threatened a bartender with the same replica gun, demanding a beer. Police first encountered Johnston at the Hilton Hotel, where he jumped into the sea and held the gun to his head.

Despite hours of negotiations, Johnston refused to surrender, ultimately provoking the police to shoot by pointing the gun at them.

Johnston had a history of confrontations with the police, including a previous incident in Glasgow involving a bomb threat. His ex-partner had reported him to the police multiple times for harassment, but she did not initially believe her life was in danger.

Restoration Of The Bell Tower of St.Mark’s Augustinian Church

Restoration Of The Bell Tower of St.Mark's Augustinian Church

The Department of Public Works is currently leading restoration efforts on several historic buildings across Malta and Gozo, including the bell tower of St. Mark’s Augustinian Church in Rabat, Malta. This bell tower, a significant architectural feature dating back to 1910, is undergoing extensive preservation work.

Parliamentary Secretary for Public Works, Omar Farrugia, recently visited the site to observe the ongoing restoration. He emphasized the government’s commitment to creating open spaces for communities while preserving Malta’s historical structures. The restoration project, costing approximately €250,000, aims to maintain the original aesthetics and design of the bell tower, which is part of the Augustinian convent.

Architect Marvienne Camilleri, who oversees the project, explained that the restoration involves removing metal elements that have caused damage and replacing deteriorated stonework and balustrades with identical replicas. Additionally, a new energy-efficient lighting system will be installed to enhance the tower’s appearance and a protective system will be implemented to safeguard it from storms and lightning. The work is expected to be completed by December.

Father Raphael Abdilla from the Augustinian Convent underscored the importance of preserving this historic structure for both the nation’s heritage and the many tourists who visit Mdina and Rabat.
