Greece making almost 300 beaches wheelchair accessible

Greece making almost 300 beaches wheelchair accessible

Hundreds of Greek beaches are set to be made accessible to wheelchair users in a new project seeking to provide people unable to get into the water the chance to do so.

Remotely operated ramps are set to be established at 287 beaches across the country, with Greek company Seatrac leading the project.

According to The Mirror, around 140 beaches have already benefited from this initiative, which sees wheelchair users move along with their chair into the sea down a track.

A handrail meanwhile assists the user to slip off the chair and into the water for a swim. Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias said that ‘equal access to the sea is an inalienable human right’.

“People with disabilities and people with limited mobility are given the opportunity to participate in beach activities with family and friends, enhancing the quality of life for everyone… (They) can engage in activities such as swimming that contribute to their physical and mental health.”

The project will also see the installing of removable changing rooms, portable sanitary facilities and accessible parking areas. Should Malta take a cue from this initiative?

Abner Aquilina moved out of Mount Carmel after harassing nurses

Abner Aquilina moved out of Mount Carmel after harassing nurses

Mount Carmel CEO Stephanie Xuereb testified in court to state that Abner Aquilina, accused of raping and murdering Paulina Dembska, threatened and harassed nurses whilst at Mount Carmel.

Aquilina has reportedly been moved to the forensic division of Corradino Correctional Facilities, which is run by prison authorities despite being in the Attard Hospital.

This was also reportedly the first time that Mount Carmel opened a court procedure to restrict a patient from receiving care.

The transfer decision had been taken after Aquilina allegedly threatened a male charge nurse and became a danger to other patients.

During the compilation of evidence, the defence asked how Aquilina was moved to the Forensic Unit and demanded that he be returned to a regular ward.

Aquilina had reportedly been receiving adequate progress but the unit did not offer the same level of care. Although the hospital was not run on an ‘open door’ policy, it did not have the same level of security as the Forensic Unit.
