Franco Debono Confirms He Will Not Stand For PN Leadership

Jun 29 2025 Share

Former Nationalist Party MP Franco Debono has confirmed he will not be contesting the PN leadership following Bernard Grech’s resignation. In a statement shared on Sunday, Debono acknowledged growing calls from party supporters and members of the public urging him to return to a more active political role. He said recent scientific and indicative surveys had placed him among the top three preferred candidates for leader, despite his absence from active politics for over a decade.

Debono expressed gratitude for the many messages, phone calls, and words of encouragement received in recent weeks. He said these calls placed a “moral obligation” on him to return in some form, and that he intends to become more involved as opportunities arise.

He emphasised the importance of unity and inclusion within the Nationalist Party, stating that every member’s contribution should be valued. “The party cannot grow stronger if it remains anchored in the past,” he said.

While ruling out a leadership bid, Debono said he would consider a more active role in the coming months, depending on circumstances. He concluded by appealing for calm and respect during this sensitive period and extended his best wishes to all leadership contenders.

With just a few hours remaining before the deadline for interested party members to submit their nominations, it is increasingly evident that the leadership race is shaping up to be a contest between Adrian Delia and Alex Borg.

Groom Spends Wedding Day In Court After Allegedly Biting Fiancée

Jun 28 2025 Share

A 29-year-old man from Żabbar was denied bail after being charged with domestic violence just one day before his planned wedding.

Dylan Agius appeared in court facing several charges following an argument with his partner on Friday, 27 June. The dispute reportedly began around noon after the woman informed Agius she no longer wanted to proceed with the wedding.

Police were called to a residence on Triq il-Kunvent in Żabbar, where they found the woman on the floor and Agius shouting at her. The victim told police that Agius had bitten her hand, burned more than €150 in cash, and smashed Kinder eggs belonging to children who were not theirs.

He was charged with causing slight injuries and instilling fear of violence. The victim later told the court she wanted to drop the charges, a move the prosecution highlighted as part of a repeated pattern. In fact, two previous domestic violence reports filed against Agius last year were also withdrawn by the same woman.

Despite his father offering to house him if bail was granted, the court denied the request, citing a risk of witness tampering and the recurring nature of the alleged abuse. Agius pleaded not guilty to all charges.
