Malta & Gozo Population At 563,443 By End Of 2023

Malta & Gozo Population At 563,443 By End Of 2023
Jul 10 2024 Share

At the end of 2023, Malta and Gozo’s estimated population reached 563,443, marking a 3.9% increase from the previous year.

This growth was primarily driven by net migration, with a total of 20,960 migrants, 93.1% of whom were non-EU citizens. Males comprised 65.3% of these migrants.

Despite a slight decrease in net migration from 2022 (3.8%), both immigration and emigration saw increases in 2023.

The natural population increase rose significantly, from 79 in 2022 to 432 in 2023, the highest since 2019. This was due to a 3.6% rise in resident live births and a 4.7% decrease in resident deaths. Of the births, 40.3% of the parents were aged 30 to 34.

Among the 4,030 resident deaths, 69.4% were individuals aged 75 and over.

By the end of 2023, males made up 53% of the total population. Those under 18 years constituted 14.7%, while 18.4% were 65 and older, including 3,611 individuals aged 90 and above.

This demographic data highlights the significant role of migration in Malta’s population growth and the shifting age structure of its residents.
