Bernard Grech Responds To Budget 2025

Bernard Grech Responds To Budget 2025

During his response to the Budget 2025 presentation, Opposition Leader Bernard Grech criticised the Labour government, arguing that it lacks a clear plan and has created record debt without solving key issues.

He stressed that Malta needs a “government of quality,” which the Nationalist Party aims to provide.

Grech emphasised that a PN-led government would be focused on addressing the real needs of the people, creating opportunities in education, and preventing poverty.

He promised a government that is transparent, accountable, and forward-thinking, working for the people rather than political interests. He also highlighted the importance of strengthening state institutions and ensuring a clear separation between government and the state.

Grech criticised the current government for its handling of the economy, governance, and public services, claiming that the Labour administration is “tired” and disconnected from the people’s concerns.

He also warned about the growing national debt, which is projected to exceed €10 billion, and highlighted how interest payments will burden future generations.

The PN, according to Grech, offers hope and a strong direction for Malta, focusing on consultation and action to create a better quality of life. He concluded by reaffirming the party’s readiness to deliver on its promises if given the public’s trust.

Activists ‘Award’ Robert Abela 1st Prime Puppet Award

Activists 'Award' Robert Abela 1st Prime Puppet Award

Yesterday evening, Moviment Graffitti activists staged a symbolic protest outside Parliament ahead of the Opposition Leader Bernard Grech’s response to the Labour government’s Budget 2025.

The activists presented the “Prime Puppet Award” to Prime Minister Robert Abela, criticising his relationship with developers in Malta.

The award was directed at the Prime Minister in recognition of his “loyal service to developers,” with the activists accusing him of prioritising their interests, the activists explained.

They claimed the Prime Minister has delayed crucial reforms, such as those related to development appeals, allowing developers to continue building even when legal objections are raised.

The activists also criticised the government for altering Local Plans to accommodate developers, citing the example of the Villa Rosa project.

The protest concluded with the activists claiming that the Prime Minister’s actions demonstrate an “absolute loyalty” to developers.

“I Lived The European Dream, Now I Want To Make It Possible For Others”

"I Lived The European Dream, Now I Want To Make It Possible For Others"

In his opening remarks at today’s European Parliament grilling, Malta’s nominee for European Commissioner, Glenn Micallef, made a strong impression by emphasising his commitment to European values and youth engagement. “It’s great to start back from where I began as an intern,” he said, highlighting his experience within EU institutions despite his young age. Micallef expressed unwavering support for Ukraine, stating, “If confirmed, we will continue to support Ukraine for as long as it takes,” dedicating part of his speech to affirm the EU’s solidarity with Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict.

Micallef shared his personal experience of living the “European dream” and stressed the importance of ensuring future generations can do the same. He highlighted that young people often feel underrepresented in democratic processes, which can lead to political disengagement and pose a risk to democracy. “Our democracy is under threat, and we can only protect it with young people on board,” he warned, urging that youth be given a meaningful role in decision-making processes.

A passionate advocate for youth inclusion, Micallef called for political action “with young people, not for young people,” and emphasised the need to provide youth with “a seat at the table.” He also underlined the importance of protecting children and addressing mental health challenges, especially online. “No child must be left behind,” he stated, pledging to prioritise youth mental health.

Micallef acknowledged the opportunities and challenges presented by artificial intelligence, noting AI’s transformative potential while cautioning against its risks. He committed to developing a comprehensive AI strategy to harness its benefits in arts, culture, and beyond.

As a former participant in grassroots sports, Micallef shared his understanding of the challenges faced by community sports and reiterated his belief that sports can promote mental health and combat issues like obesity. He encouraged Europeans to embrace physical activity, noting that nearly half do not engage in regular exercise.

On the subject of funding, Micallef highlighted the importance of initiatives like Erasmus+ and outlined his intention to maximise their impact. He closed with a call for a “youth perspective” in EU legislation, stating that, starting next year, all proposals will be assessed for their impact on young people.
