Local child care keeps Maltese heritage alive through ‘Festa Week’

Local child care keeps Maltese heritage alive through ‘Festa Week’

Lil’ Ville child care has stood out to the fore as a centre which, apart from building up kids into future adults, keeps Maltese heritage alive throughout the generations.

Coming up with ‘Festa Week’, the initiative seeks to keep Maltese tradition strong by igniting, among other things, interest in musicians joining band clubs.

In fact, one band club member by the name of Javier took to the Benny Bunny Club, which forms part of the centre, to play and educate the little kids on the practice.

The kids also engaged in other activities such as painting the iconic local fireworks and other aspects of daily Maltese life as well as creating beaches from playing material.

According to their story, Lil’ Ville said that ‘While one might say life has become less strenuous, with everything we need at our fingertips, we wanted to do things a bit differently at Lil’Ville and decided to pause, take a step back and go back to our roots.’

Footage sent to this newsroom shows what seems to be the formation of an off-shore tornado right between the islands of Gozo and Comino.

The footage was filmed at a safe distance from the phenomenon, but it is strongly advised to avoid the area in case the weather pattern worsens the phenomenon. It is unknown if the tornado has subdued as of yet.

Harmless fried egg jellyfish makes first appearance of the summer in Malta

Aug 11 2022 Share

The iconic fried egg jellyfish, locally known as “tal-lampuki” or “qassata”, has made it’s first appearance this summer in Maltese seas.

The jellyfish was first found floating around at crystal lagoon in Comino on the 9th of August. Facebook page Maltese Islands Weather had this to say about the first sighting of the marine creature: “It’s almost that time of year again! The fried-egg jellyfish will slowly start returning to local waters.”

The page also revealed that “it prevails for a very short time here, with the jellyfish usually disappearing from local seas by the beginning of October.” It is also harmless with it inflicting only a very mild sting.

The jellyfish has distinct purple tentacles and a dark yellow bell with a diameter of about 30cm. They are usually found in the western and central parts of the Mediterranean.

Local marine biologist and lecturer Alan Deidun revealed on Facebook that “Yet again this year, as has been happening in recent years, the species has appeared earlier on in summer, yet another indicator of the warming trend shown by our seas”. This summer has seen an invasion of jellyfish on Malta’s beaches due to rising sea temperatures.
