A new smart manufacturing research project has been launched in Malta, announced by Parliamentary Secretary Keith Azzopardi Tanti at Seifert Systems Ltd in Ħal Far.

The initiative is part of a larger program that includes ten research projects, aiming to enhance Malta’s industrial sector, create jobs, and promote sustainable economic growth. The project is a collaboration between the private sector and the University of Malta.

Azzopardi Tanti highlighted the importance of equipping Malta’s industry with the skills and tools needed to compete globally, stating that smart manufacturing will not only drive economic opportunities but also create high-quality jobs for Maltese workers and graduates.

The project will focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and automation in production. It will also provide specialised training to help workers adapt to this rapidly evolving sector while supporting local businesses in their global expansion.

Project leader Engineer Emanuel Francalanza from the University of Malta described it as a transformative initiative that will make Malta’s economy more sustainable and competitive. Philip Seifert, General Manager of Seifert Systems, emphasised that Malta offers an ideal business environment, supported by government investment and modern infrastructure.

This project is a key step toward positioning Malta as a leader in smart manufacturing, reflecting strong collaboration between the government, industry, and academia.

If that’s not a panoramic view – we don’t know what is!

A video shared by @powderchasers on social media shows the daring adrenaline seekers skiing as magma pours just metres away from them – and in the dark no less.

But if anything, the searing lava provides some light guidance to accompany their headlights.

90 Day Amnesty Period To Register Dangerous Animals Without Penalties

Feb 18 2025 Share

In a press conference held today at Ta’ Qali, the Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries, and Animal Rights discussed new regulations concerning the keeping of dangerous animals.

The event, organised by animal activists and NGOs, was attended by Minister Anton Refalo, Parliamentary Secretary Alicia Bugeja Said, and other key authorities.

Among the key points discussed were:

Amnesty Period: A 90-day grace period was introduced, allowing the public to register dangerous animals without penalties, aimed at updating Malta’s animal registry.

Neutering Requirements: The government will mandate neutering of dangerous animals to control their population and prevent illegal breeding.

The new measures are a response to concerns over unregistered dangerous animals, following multiple reports since the Regulations on the Keeping of Dangerous Animals (SL 439.19) came into force in 2016. In response, 25 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) submitted proposals for stricter regulations, which included a designated registration period and mandatory neutering.

The proposed amendments to Subsidiary Legislation 439.19 will come into effect today, giving animal owners three months to comply with the updated regulations. Applications for registration must meet the stipulated requirements, and owners who fail to comply will face confiscation of their animals and fines ranging from €2,000 to €65,000.

The government’s collaboration with animal advocates and NGOs resulted in the implementation of these measures, following extensive discussions. While activists emphasised that they do not support the ownership of dangerous animals, they acknowledged their presence in Malta and called for controlled solutions to ensure both animal welfare and public safety.

The government also announced that applications for registration must be submitted in person to the Directorate for Veterinary Regulations at the Animal Protection Section in Marsa.
