Lara Azzopardi Joined By Local Figures For World Transplant Day

Local actress and presenter Lara Azzopardi was joined by various local figures to raise awareness by World Transplant Day and encourage people to register and become an organ donor.

The actress, known for her roles on Ċaqqufa amongst other local productions, took to social media to advocate for organ donation, which could help so many people struggling.

Joining Lara in her advocacy were wife of the Prime Minister Lydia Abela, Opposition leader Bernard Grech, Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela, PN MP Adrian Delia and Health Superintendent Charmaine Gauci.

Lara explains how one of her friends has just received a heart, thanks to the generous act of a donor. It was a very complex process for the person to go through, but ultimately had his life changed and saved through the donation.

It is very easy to become a donor. One can visit organdonation.gov.mt or e.ID to register.

Hammer Used In Argument Between 2 Ukrainians & 2 Serbians

Yesterday, at around 2330hrs, police were informed that their assistance was needed in Triq il-Modd, is-Swieqi.

Police convened immediately on site and preliminary investigations showed that an argument had broken out between two Ukrainian men, aged 27 and 32 years old, and two Serbian men aged 33 and 31 years old.

All those involved were Swieqi residents. During the argument, a hammer was reportedly used and the Serbians fled the scene.

A medical team offered assistance to the Ukrainians and transported them to Mater Dei Hospital. The 27 year old was confirmed to have suffered grievous injuries whereas the other suffered light injuries.

During the investigations, the Serbians were arrested in a Swieqi residence. A number of as of yet undisclosed objects were confiscated from the residence.

Police investigations are ongoing.

The Los Angeles Lakers and the Bryant family unveiled a bronze statue outside Crypto.com Arena honouring Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna, celebrating Kobe’s pride in being a “Girl Dad” and his support for women in sports.

The statue, depicting Kobe with his arm around Gianna and surrounded by symbolic elements, reflects their shared basketball legacy and Kobe’s dedication to his daughters.

Vanessa Bryant, speaking at the event, highlighted the significance of the statue, merging two iconic moments of Kobe and Gianna court side. She emphasised Kobe’s support for Gianna’s dreams and the broader movement towards gender equality in sports.

Vanessa urged everyone to support young girls in sports, reinforcing their potential and encouraging their ambitions, as Kobe and Gianna would have wanted.

The statue, designed by Karon Davis and created by Rotblatt Amrany Studio, features Kobe and Gianna with angel wings, surrounded by elements representing Kobe’s Italian childhood and the Lakers’ colours.

A plaque honours Gianna as an “Inspirational Icon for Girls in Sports” and Kobe as a “Proud Supporter of Women in Sports.” The installation date, 8/2/24, commemorates the numbers worn by Kobe and Gianna during their basketball careers.

Novak Djokovic won his first Olympic gold medal, defeating Carlos Alcaraz 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-2) in an emotionally charged and high-stakes match, completing a career Golden Slam.

This victory adds to Djokovic’s remarkable career, which already includes a men’s-record 24 Grand Slam titles and the most weeks at No. 1 in tennis rankings.

Previously, Djokovic had won a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and had lost to the eventual gold medalists in three other Games.
