L-Istrina 2024 Raises An Outstanding €5.21 million for Community Chest Fund

Malta’s largest annual charity telethon kicked off yet again on Boxing Day, with an outstanding €5.21 million being raised for the Malta Community Chest Fund.

The funds primarily go towards supporting the costs of costly medical treatments for patients, including children.

Community Chest Fund President Myriam Spiteri Debono expressed her gratitude to all donors, praising their generosity and reaffirming her belief in the strong sense of solidarity among the Maltese people.

L-Istrina, which first began in 1995, has grown over the years to become a Boxing Day television tradition in many Maltese homes.

The highest ever total donation gathered occurred in 2018, with the Maltese people donating an outstanding €7 million.

Malta’s leaders were also present at the annual Boxing Day event, with Prime Minister Robert Abela presenting a €100,000 donation from the Good Causes Fund and stating that “It’s an occasion that brings people together – it unites us all in solidarity, ”

Opposition leader Bernard Grech described l-Istrina as a longstanding tradition that brings together generous individuals. He also encouraged people to contribute and support those in need, helping them overcome their challenges.

Road Closures Around Msida Scheduled for Tonight

Infrastructure Malta has announced an overnight road closure for the southbound carriageway of Triq Mikiel Anton Vassalli (towards Valletta) this evening, 26th December, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM.

The closure is required to facilitate the installation of street lighting as part of preparations for the temporary route changes linked to the ongoing Msida Creek Project. This project aims to improve traffic management and infrastructure in the area.

Motorists traveling from Gżira or Kappara towards Valletta are encouraged to use the Regional Road towards Msida Valley Road during the closure.

Drivers are advised to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and follow detour signs to minimize delays.

MPs And TV Personalities Join Forces In Aid Of ‘L-Istrina’

MALTESE MPS AND TV PERSONALITIES JOIN FORCES IN FOOTBALL MATCH IN AID OF ‘L-ISTRINA’

A set of football matches were held this morning at the Ta’ Qali Centenary Stadium to raise funds for ‘L-Istrina’. Malta’s Members of Parliament, MFA Coaches, Referees, and TV Personalities came together and took part against each other’s teams.

Following last year’s footsteps, the games brought together MPs from opposing political parties to play together in support of charity.

President of Malta Myriam Spiteri Debono, Sport and Education Minister Clifton Grima, as well as Opposition leader Bernard Grech, visited the teams at the stadium, ahead of today’s L-Istrina fundraiser.

All sums from the tournament will go towards the Malta Community Chest Fund.

Yesterday, on Christmas day, the Police were informed of a car accident in St Julian’s, which happened in Triq Mikiel Anton Vassalli at around 3:30pm.

The Police confirmed that a 28-year-old man, resident of Żejtun, lost control of a BMW and flipped his vehicle. 

The 25-year-old passenger, also a Żejtun resident, received medical help on site and was rushed to Mater Dei by ambulance. His injuries were later certified as grievous. 

Members from the Department of Civil Protection also assisted at the scene.

Police investigations are still ongoing.
