On Sunday, September 29th, Robert Scerri and Andrew Pisani will undertake a 100 km kayaking challenge from Pozzallo, Sicily to Exiles Bay, Sliema. This event, Kayak4Kate, aims to raise funds for five-year-old Kate Ferriggi, diagnosed with Tatton Brown Rahman Syndrome, a rare overgrowth condition affection 1 in 7 million people.
Kate is the sole case in Malta and also suffers from global developmental delay and other health issues, necessitating intensive daily therapies, some of which are conducted abroad at significant cost.
The crossing will test both paddlers’ physical and mental endurance, with parts of the journey occurring in pitch darkness. Robert, a seasoned athlete and personal trainer, founded the training team ‘4ever Warriors’ and coaches athletes for competitions like OCR. Andrew, who is the the head of the Dar Charles Miceli unit at Caritas was never in the sports scene, making this his first major sports endeavour.
Despite the immense challenge, Robert and Andrew are driven by the desire to support Kate’s fight for improved mobility and cognitive abilities. Their commitment to helping Kate lead a more comfortable life fuels their determination to complete this journey.
