Job Registration Decrease As Unemployment Drops

In June 2023, the number of individuals registering for work was 875, showing a decline of 79 people compared to the same month in 2022.

According to data from Jobsplus for June 2023, there was a year-on-year decrease of 63 individuals registering under Part I of the unemployment register and a decrease of 16 individuals under Part II.

The decrease in registered unemployment was observed in most age groups except for those under 20 years old.

In terms of duration, there was a year-on-year decrease of 41 individuals registering for work for under 21 weeks and a decrease of 37 individuals registering for over one year.

The number of individuals registering for work for 21 to 52 weeks saw a minimal decrease of -1.

In June 2023, the number of persons with a disability registering for work decreased by 23 compared to the previous year, with a total of 208 persons. Males accounted for 77.4% of the total registrants with a disability.

The majority of both male and female registrants on the unemployment register were seeking occupations as Clerical Support Workers, with 23.8% for males and 39.0% for females.

Meet The (Invasive) Blue Swimmer Crab

Malta Ginger Mermaid, a local free diver and underwater photographer/videographer, gave us a glimpse at a Blue Swimmer Crab, an alien species in Maltese waters.

The massive crab, with colourful punters and legs and a golden carapace, can be seen floating in the deep waters, it’s arms extended as it hurries on sideways.

The species is unfortunately considered a very invasive species, with it’s population very difficult to control. It is a native of the Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf.

And while it sports an omnivore diet, the crab itself is also exploited commercially for culinary reasons.

Over €1.5 Million In Funds Awarded For 19 Local Productions

Nineteen local productions have been awarded over €1.54 million in funds for productions as part of the Creative Malta scheme administered by the Malta Film Commission.

Launched in December 2022, the Creative Malta scheme was designed to better meet the industry’s needs.

The process has also been made simpler and more producer-friendly with a more straightforward application process that focuses on creativity.

Additionally, the focus is for filmmakers to think globally, supporting more local producers and strengthening local productions further. This is a commitment to elevate Maltese film to a broader stage.

Creative Malta is just one of a number of schemes and initiatives by Government which support local productions and local producers.

The Malta Film Commission has also extended the cash rebate initiative, which can rise up to 50%, to local productions to support their projects further.

Malta Airport Breaks Passenger Number Record

In the first half of 2023, the International Airport of Malta recorded a record number of passengers, with 3.43 million people passing through, indicating a 5.6% increase compared to the same period in 2019.

This growth placed Malta International Airport among a group of European airports experiencing traffic increases.

During a press conference, the CEO, Alan Borg, highlighted the airport’s outstanding seat load factors, reaching a peak of 86% in June, matching the performance levels of 2022 and 2019.

Borg also discussed the challenges of inflation and rising air ticket prices, which could impact travel demand in Europe. He pledged to collaborate closely with the Maltese Tourism Authority to enhance connectivity with other countries.

The CEO of the Maltese Tourism Authority, Carlo Micallef, acknowledged the airport’s role in attracting record numbers of tourists to Malta. He emphasized the importance of seizing opportunities to boost connectivity and utilize Malta’s potential.

The conference also revealed that Malta International Airport’s capital expenditure for the first six months of the year amounted to approximately €8 million.

The airport plans to complete the first phase of works on Apron X by summer 2024, adding three operational aircraft parking stands. The extensive rehabilitation of Runway 23-05 is scheduled to begin in the last quarter of the year.
