Jewellery Shop Robber Gets 28 Years For Attempted Murder
Jan 9 2025 Share

Donna Sciberras, 30, has been sentenced to 28 years in prison after admitting to her involvement in the attempted murder and robbery of Joseph Carabott, a Żurrieq jewellery shop owner. The crime occurred on August 25, 2023, when Carabott, then 67, was brutally attacked in his shop on Triq Dun Ġużepp Zammit. He was left bound and critically injured behind a locked door after calling for help during the robbery. He was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital in critical condition.

Initially pleading not guilty, Sciberras later changed her plea as part of an agreement with the Attorney General’s Office. Co-accused Mohamed Anas Boualam and Zouhair Hadoumi also face charges, including grievous bodily harm, illegal restraint, and carrying a knife during the robbery. Both have pleaded not guilty.

The case gained attention when Sciberras lunged at one of her co-defendants in court, accusing him of shifting blame. Police later revealed that a prison inmate had informed authorities that Sciberras had hinted at the robbery weeks before it occurred.

On Thursday, Mr. Justice Neville Camilleri sentenced Sciberras to prison, ordered the confiscation of her €250 deposit and €10,000 guarantee, and imposed a fine of €12,979.72 for court expenses, payable within two years. Sciberras was also instructed to pay €8,000 in compensation to Carabott and issued a five-year protection order in his favour.

One mural is in Qui-si-Sana, Sliema, while the other is in London. Titled The Loss of Innocence, the murals depict haunting imagery of bullet-ridden teddy bears with blood seeping onto the ground, surrounded by silhouettes of Palestinian children standing solemnly next to a Palestinian flag.

The bleak sky and drones in the background, coupled with grey, crumbling buildings, portray the destruction and despair of the conflict.

The London version adds an unsettling Christmas twist, featuring teddy bears wearing Santa hats, symbolising lost childhoods during what should be a festive season. Twitch explained that the murals aim to draw attention to the unacceptable violence against children, inspired by daily reports of the tragic toll of war.

Both murals measure 10 meters in length and were completed in designated areas for street art. The Sliema mural, created with environmentally friendly chalk paint, ensures no lasting damage to the environment.
