Maltese driver Jesmar Gafa achieved a historic milestone at the Coupe Intercontinentale des Amateurs, an international race that unites 14 amateur drivers from across Europe. Representing Malta, Gafa was selected by the Malta Racing Club to compete in this prestigious event, held as part of the special racing weekend leading up to the renowned Prix d’Amérique in France.

Driving horse number 10, GUEPARD GRIFF, Gafa delivered an exceptional performance, securing second place in the competitive race. Starting from the second row behind the autostart, Gafa skillfully positioned his horse on the outside lane, maintaining a steady pace. As the final 700 metres approached, he urged GUEPARD GRIFF into a powerful surge, challenging for the lead. Despite stiff competition, his efforts paid off when a disqualification in the leading ranks propelled him to second place.

Germany’s Sarah Kube claimed victory with GIZMOGOLD, while Italy’s Matteo Zaccherini finished third with HUNADORA.

Gafa’s achievement marks the best-ever result by a Maltese driver in this prestigious competition. “It’s an incredible honor to represent Malta on this stage,” Gafa shared, reflecting on the experience. His success not only highlights his talent but also puts Malta firmly on the map in the world of amateur racing.

The second volume of Memories from San Vincenzo de Paul has been officially launched, offering a unique glimpse into Maltese life through the stories and experiences of elderly residents. Compiled by Professor Raymond Mangion, the book captures the essence of Malta’s cultural identity, traditions, and history.

This latest volume highlights traditions that have faded away, words and expressions no longer in use, personal accounts from the Second World War, and long-forgotten crafts. The publication serves as a vital tool for preserving the memories that define Malta’s heritage, ensuring they are passed down to future generations.

The launch event was attended by Parliamentary Secretary for Active Ageing, Malcolm Paul Agius Galea, and Dr Lydia Abela, who shared that some of her relatives contributed to the book.

Agius Galea emphasised the importance of such projects, saying: “This book honours the invaluable contributions of the elderly and ensures their stories continue to shape our identity and culture. It is a testament to the enduring strength of Maltese values and traditions.”

Ozone Layer Set To Heal By 2066

Ozone Layer Set To Heal By 2066
Jan 25 2025 Share

The ozone layer is on track to fully recover by 2066, thanks to decades of global action, particularly the 1987 Montreal Protocol.

The agreement to phase out ozone-depleting chemicals has led to a steady reduction in the size of the Antarctic ozone hole.

Satellite data from the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) shows significant progress, with experts predicting the ozone will return to pre-1980 levels by mid-century.

This recovery is expected to reduce skin cancer rates, protect ecosystems, and contribute to climate change mitigation by lowering greenhouse gas emissions.

Experts caution that illegal chemical production and emerging environmental threats could still pose risks. Thus, continued global vigilance is necessary to ensure full recovery.

With the ozone layer’s healing, scientists hope this success story can inspire solutions to other pressing environmental challenges.
