“I’m not a rich person. I don’t have a lot of money. Here, in your presence, I’ll make a promise, if a person presents me with an amputee and, with faith and prayer, because for God everything is possible, this amputee’s leg grows back, I will give him my house.”

The controversial episode had its fair share of discussion about faith, setting the country’s social media ablaze after Phyllisienne Brincat implied that sickness and disability stem from sin.

Esplora Celebrates International Day Of Older Persons
Oct 5 2023 Share

On the occasion of the International Day of Older Persons, Esplora Interactive Science Centre opened its doors to welcome older adults from various parts of the island for a day filled with science and wonder. The event marked a significant step in promoting an active and fulfilling life for older persons, highlighting that science is for all ages.

Not only did the older adults enjoy a day of interactive exhibits and science shows, but an important Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was also signed, forging a partnership between governmental entities Malta Council for Science and Technology (MCST) and Active Ageing and Care in the Community (AACC).

The signing of the MOU took place in the presence of the Minister for Active Ageing, Hon. Jo Etienne Abela and the Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research and Innovation, Hon. Keith Azzopardi Tanti. The agreement, signed by Mr Silvio Scerri for MCST and Dr Renzo De Gabriele for AACC, is designed to make science and technology more accessible to older adults, offering them advantageous entry rates and specially designed packages.

This agreement, that in part will offer the opportunity to have programmes of educational activities for older persons, also aligns with the government’s commitment to keeping older adults active both physically and intellectually. Through Esplora Interactive Science Centre, science and technology are being spread across generations, highlighting the fact that education does not stop with children and youths but is also given to older adults so that they can pass it on to their children and grandchildren.

With the science centre’s commitment to bringing science and technology closer to people of all ages and backgrounds, closer to the community, through this Memorandum of Understanding, 7,000 older adults will have the opportunity to enjoy a unique experience at Esplora. In addition to welcoming older adults to the science centre, the Esplora team actively visits older persons homes as part of their community outreach programme, ensuring that science is accessible to all.

The Memorandum of Understanding signed on this International Day for Older Persons marks a significant step in making science and technology more inclusive for Malta’s older adult population. It underlines the commitment of Esplora and governmental entities to create opportunities for older persons to lead active, fulfilling lives while contributing to the education and well-being of future generations.

In this spirit, Esplora continues to serve as a place of discovery, learning and intergenerational exchange, embodying the belief that science knows no age limits. As we celebrate the International Day for Older Persons, it is a reminder that knowledge and wonder are timeless, and they can be enjoyed by individuals of all ages.

Speaking ahead of the European Political Community Summit in Granada, Spain, European President Roberta Metsola said that this meeting is important because of the investment going into our continent’s geostrategic peace, security and stability.

‘Ukraine and Moldova – we should start accession negotiations with these two countries once all conditions are fulfilled.’

Metsola said that she will meet Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Vovayi Pashinyan, saying that she will not only offer assistance with the humanitarian crisis in regards to persons leaving Nagorno-Karabakh, but will also:

‘with the integration of refugees in Armenia, and I will also invite the Prime Minister of Armenia to address the Plenary Session in a couple of weeks.’

‘I see the European Political Community as the reason to bring all allies together. If we are not together, if we are not together as a continent, then actors from elsewhere will try to influence our continent. That’s my first point.’

‘This is an opportunity for everybody to come together as has been the case with the negotiations that have been taking place.’

An audience member called the statements, which suggested that anyone born with Down syndrome or any disability, as insulting and putting further stigma on those suffering.

Meanwhile, Oliver Scicluna, CEO of Aġenzija Sapport, took to social media to say that the comments made by Jacob (the audience member) accurately explain how comments implying that persons with disabilities suffer from such conditions are a result of sin only increases the stigma.

‘No, I believe that certain discourse cannot be tolerated further, because it is otherwise useless to clap about rights and inclusion.’

The Commission for the Rights of Persons With Disability also released a statement, saying that:

‘The disability sector has come a long way from these antiquated ideas and these opinions are completely detrimental to the acknowledgement that persons with disability should be given the respect they are entitled to as equal citizens in Malta.’
