The helpline number 138, commemorating Jean Paul Sofia’s birthday on August 13th, was launched as a new 24/7 centralized system for inquiries related to construction, health, and safety.
Minister for Justice and Reform of the Construction Sector, Jonathan Attard, introduced this initiative aimed at raising standards in the construction sector and giving a stronger voice to workers and those affected by it.
The helpline connects citizens with the Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA) and the Building and Construction Authority (BCA), ensuring immediate response to high-risk situations and regulatory questions.
Minister Attard emphasized the significance of this initiative as part of broader reforms in the construction sector, expressing that the service was established in remembrance of all victims and their families, particularly honoring Jean Paul Sofia.
The helpline is one of five immediate initiatives announced earlier this year, with further reforms expected soon, including a new OHSA law and free legal services for those impacted by construction issues.
The helpline’s launch underscores the government’s commitment to improving safety and regulation in the construction sector, with trained agents ready to address concerns and direct calls to the appropriate authorities for prompt action.
PN MP Jerome Caruana Cilia issued a statement on the decision, writing that this will serve as a reminder for us not to forget what happened to Jean Paul, and not let it happen again.
