Janet Richard and Jeremy Zammit were awarded ‘Athletes of the Year’ by Athletics Malta.
After a series of top level performances during the past months, Richard and Zammit, received the Association’s highest honour during an award ceremony held on Sunday evening.
This year, the long-jumper Jeremy Zammit of Pembroke Athleta broke a national record that stood for 17 years with a jump of 7.73m. He is also the first Maltese athlete in his category to reach the finals of both the World and European Under 20 Championships. Zammit has also obtained a prestigious scholarship at the D1 University of Auburn in the United States, where he will also continue his studies.
Janet Richard, of Pembroke Athleta was awarded this title for the second time after achieving a national record in 400m when competing in the European Championships in Munich, Germany where she achieved a time of 53.49s. Richard also formed part of another national record, in the 4x100m relay, with a time of 45.59s during the Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham. She also won two gold medals for Malta in the European Championships of Small Countries.
Athletics Malta also awarded a number of other athletes in the different age categories. The winners include Claire Azzopardi, Beppe Grillo, Dillon Cassar, Bradley Mifsud, Mireya Cassar and Matthew Galea Soler.
