It was a special day for Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher, as he watched his son, James Carragher, make his international debut for Malta in their 2026 World Cup qualifier against Finland.
The former England defender made the trip to Ta’ Qali for the big occasion, rubbing shoulders with MFA president Bjorn Vassallo, Prime Minister Robert Abela, and Minister Clifton Grima. And while Malta fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat, James put in a solid performance at the back, wearing the number 18 and showing real promise in his first international outing.

Proud dad Jamie wasted no time taking to social media, posting: “Very proud of (James) on your international debut. Didn’t deserve the loss son.” Meanwhile, Prime Minister Abela joined in the fun, cheekily posting a photo with Carragher captioned: “Half-time tactics with Jamie Carragher.”
With his first cap in the bag, James Carragher’s international journey is just beginning – and with dad Jamie watching on, you can bet there’ll be plenty more proud moments to come!
