Taking to social media, the late Jake Vella’s mother Marsuska wished her husband Josie a happy birthday – lending some words of encouragement for the both of them in the process.

‘I know that this year will be different but we are the ones who have to make life beautiful. It’s not easy without you Jake, but we need to learn from your example and have courage and positivity’.

‘Thank you Josie for always being a shoulder for us in the good and the bad. Thank you for the support you always showed us. We love you.’

A One-Night-Only Macbeth This October 18th

Teatru Manoel’s Learning and Participation Programme, Toi Toi, is presenting a new and exciting production of Macbeth on Friday 18th October at 7.30pm at St Agatha’s Auditorium, Triq Emanuele Vitale, Rabat. This production is part of our TOI TOI Classics outreach project, bringing the immediacy of Shakespeare’s language to life.

Adapted and directed by Philip Leone Ganado, this production features a cast of characters played by a talented troupe of actors including Anton Saliba as Macbeth and Michela Farrugia as Lady Macbeth with Joseph Zammit, Alex Weenink, Kelly Peplow and Katrina Lupi sharing all the other parts.

There’s a reason Macbeth is and has always been one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays. This classic story of ambition, power and consequence remains as relevant today as it has ever been, its supernatural elements remain as dangerously alluring and its warnings on the nature of evil as timely.

It is also a deeply psychological play, charting the unravelling of two people who allow themselves to be seduced into acts of unspeakable horror. This adaptation seeks to tap into this horror, tracking Macbeth and Lady Macbeth into the depths of their darkness and sticking close as the walls begin to close in and their downfall unfolds.

Whether Macbeth was, or is, on your study list or whether you are a theatre lover and/or would like to explore the beautiful world of Shakespeare this is the production for you.

The Imperial Male Voice Choir To Give Concerts In Malta

For almost 50 years the Imperial Male Voice Choir (IMVC) has entertained audiences and been successful in competitions at home and on tours to France, Germany, Ireland, Switzerland, Slovenia and Russia.

Their eclectic repertoire spans almost 1000 years from plainchant and sacred through folk-song, classical, opera, musical theatre and popular genres.

Musical director, Deborah Miles- Johnson, and accompanist, Brian Parsons, are alumni of the Royal College of Music and both have many years of professional experience in performing, directing and teaching music. Our concerts usually raise money for charity.

The IMVC takes its name from Imperial College, University of London, where the founder members met in the 1970s. Although Imperial is renowned world-wide for its tuition and research in the fields of Science, Technology and Medicine, its students and alumni also have a notable enthusiasm and reputation for music-making.

The IMVC’s four planned concerts in Malta will focus particularly, but not exclusively, on sacred music and arrangements of traditional/ folk song harmonised for male voices.

Tuesday 15 October at 7pm: Sir Temi Zammit Hall, University of Malta, Msida. Secular music, especially male voice arrangements of English folk songs arranged by composers such as Vaughan Williams, Holst and Elgar. Wednesday 16 October 6:45pm: Basilica, Triq il Victoria, Senglea. An evening of sacred music covering more than 500 years from plainchant and Tallis through Schubert, Fauré and African-American spirituals to the 21st century within the glorious inspiring setting of the Basilica of Senglea. In aid of Foodbank, Senglea.

Friday 18 October 7.30pm: Parish Church, Għasri, Gozo. Hosted by the renowned Gozitan choir Schola Cantorum Jubilate and directed by Marouska Attard, each choir will sing some of its favourites and will join forces in some powerful, uplifting choral pieces by composers such as Bruckner and Vaughan Williams. Saturday 19 October 11:30am: Seminary of the Sacred Heart, Triq Enrico Mizzi, Victoria, Gozo.The final concert, in Victoria, will feature predominantly secular music. Marouska Attard (soprano) will join Deborah Miles-Johnson (mezzo-soprano) in duets by Dvorak and Rossini and combine with the choir in the finale. In aid of Gozo Diocesan Caritas – a church charity helping the needy on Gozo.

Admission to each concert is FREE. Donations at the end of the concert will go towards the chosen cause.

Duke & Duchess Of Edinburgh In Malta

This week, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh are visiting Malta to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the country’s independence.

On Tuesday, the Royal couple honoured Malta’s resilience during World War II by laying a wreath in Valletta Harbour, which had endured heavy bombardment by the Luftwaffe and Italian Air Force.

In 1942, amidst these intense attacks, King George VI awarded the George Cross to the people of Malta for their bravery, perseverance, and loyalty.

During the visit, the Duke of Edinburgh also toured the newly established Maltese headquarters of The Duke of Edinburgh International Award.

There, he met with young participants engaged in activities as they work towards achieving their bronze, silver, and gold awards.
