EU President Roberta Metsola issued a statement on social media for World Press Freedom Day to commemorate the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, saying that she should have been protected.

‘More than 2,000 days have passed since that dark Monday afternoon when Daphne Caruana Galizia’s life was taken away in the most brutal of ways’ wrote Metsola.

‘From when Daphne last spoke with her husband and her sons, from when she last visited her parents, from when she last called her sisters, from when she uploaded her last blog a few minutes before she was blown up outside her home.’

Metsola said that everything was taken away that afternoon except for her stories and investigations towards the truth.

On such days, Metsola said, she reflects on all the times she was attacked, threatened, harassed, ridiculed, mocked and became the subject of a targeted character assassination.

‘The European Parliament remains committed to its calls for justice, for the respect of the rule of law for media freedom’ concluded Metsola.

This comes after Malta placed in 84th place in the World Press Freedom Index, dropping from 78th place in 2022.
