Yesterday, local authorities in Verona announced that the club failed to meet Serie D’s registration deadline. Chievo Verona, as of 2019, were a Serie A club. They were promoted for the first time to Serie A in 2001 and from there spent 19 seasons in the top division, even though they had one of the smallest budgets possible. In 2005/2006 they even managed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League after Milan, Fiorentina, Lazio and Juventus all lost positions after cheating.
The club finished this year in 8th place in Italy’s second division Serie B. After learning the news of the clubs financial problems, captain Sergio Pellissier led a search for owners to invest in a phoenix club using Chievo’s name. The search ultimately failed, with the club now having the opportunity to start up again in the Veneto amateur leagues.
