Italian football legend Salvatore ‘Toto’ Schillaci, the top scorer at the 1990 World Cup, has passed away at the age of 59.
Schillaci became a national hero after scoring six goals during the tournament, held in Italy, earning both the Golden Boot and the Golden Ball for his outstanding performance.
Despite Italy’s semi-final exit, his energy and passion captivated fans, cementing his place in football history.
Schillaci’s professional career began at Messina before joining Juventus in 1989, where he quickly became a fan favourite.
Juventus described him as a player with immense passion, whose celebrations brought joy to the entire nation. Schillaci’s first World Cup goal came as a substitute against Austria, and his partnership with Roberto Baggio saw him continue scoring through the knockout stages.
He famously scored in the semi-final against Argentina, though Italy was defeated in a penalty shootout.
In the third-place match, Schillaci secured his sixth goal, earning the Golden Boot.
Serie A paid tribute, calling him “a champion who lit up the magical nights of the 1990 World Cup” and a source of inspiration for aspiring footballers. Schillaci had been battling colon cancer since 2022.
