Yesterday, Tuesday 30th May 2023, was set to be the launch of the Irrestawra Darek Scheme, which would have seen €5 million allocated to property owners to restore the facades of local homes.
However, after its expected launch at noon, 1200HRS, the online application collapsed within seconds under heavy traffic of users all trying to apply for the scheme.
This saw many raise various questions and understandably angered at their missed opportunity, with a statement of condemnation by the Karma tal-Periti also being issued.
‘After two hours of refreshing the error pages, the application form disappeared from the website indicating that the scheme may have been shut down by the Planning Authority altogether’, the Kamra’s statement pointed out.
Among those who made their frustrations public was radio host Taryn Mamo Cefai, who posted to social media: ‘Opens at 12:00, system crashes at 12:01, reopens again with all funds gone & already allocated! Just another joke in this country. Imma l-aqwa li nħeġġu ż-żgħażagħ jinvestu u jirrenovaw fil-UCAs (Urban Conservation Areas).’
PN MP Rebekah Borg also issued a statement, calling the system ‘disastrous’ and unfair for those who tried to apply. Some were also raising questions about whether the funds were allocated prior to the scheme launch, calling the scheme a ruse intended to allocate money for a certain group of people.
The Kamra also issued a set of demands, which include an apology to all architects, an immediate repeal of the first-come-first serve-basis, a drawing of lots from all eligible applicants and an immediate reopening of the scheme without an end-date.
