Irkottafest in Ħal Kirkop is an annual festival that celebrates and safeguards one of Malta’s most cherished culinary traditions—the art of making irkotta.

Set against the charming backdrop of the village of Ħal Kirkop, the event pays tribute to the region’s deep-rooted agricultural heritage, with a particular focus on the traditional process of washing Maltese cheeselets.

A central feature of Irkottafest is the live demonstrations showcasing how irkotta was made in earlier times.

Visitors have the unique opportunity to witness these age-old techniques firsthand, gaining insight into the craftsmanship behind this beloved fresh, sweet cheese made from warm milk and seawater.

Alongside these demonstrations, local chefs and artisans prepare a variety of dishes highlighting irkotta, including popular items like ravioli, cannoli, and classic Maltese sweets. These offerings provide a flavourful glimpse into the island’s rich culinary landscape.

The festival goes beyond food, featuring cultural entertainment such as traditional folk music and dance performances, as well as exhibitions of local artisan work.

Guests can also explore historical landmarks in Ħal Kirkop, including Paleochristian catacombs and ancient megalithic sites, enriching the overall experience.

Organised by the Ħal Kirkop Local Council in partnership with cultural and tourism entities, Irkottafest promotes the preservation of Malta’s culinary traditions while fostering community spirit and cultural appreciation.

Sunday, 18th May 2025, from 9AM to 5PM. Join the celebration!

Launch of EU-Co-Financed ‘Species Diversification For Maltese Aquaculture’ Project

May 12 2025 Share

In a significant step towards improving the resilience and sustainability of Malta’s aquaculture sector, the Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Animal Rights, Alicia Bugeja Said, alongside Dr Frank Fabri, CEO of the Aquatic Resources Malta Agency, officially launched the ‘Species Diversification for Maltese Aquaculture’ project. The initiative, co-financed by the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF), aims to foster innovation and growth in Malta’s thriving aquaculture industry.

The project focuses on introducing closed-cycle breeding methods for new fish species, further diversifying the aquaculture sector. Currently, Malta’s aquaculture industry produces around 2,500 tonnes annually of sea bream and sea bass. However, with the introduction of amberjack and red porgy into the breeding cycle, the project seeks to reduce the industry’s vulnerability and promote long-term sustainability.

This project will help improve the resilience, sustainability, and competitiveness of Malta’s aquaculture industry.”

Mark Vella, Head of Communications at the European Commission Representation in Malta, praised the project for its innovative approach to aquaculture diversification. “This project is an excellent example of how the European Commission, in collaboration with its member states, fosters sustainable and diverse aquaculture practices,” Vella stated. “It demonstrates the European Commission’s commitment to serving the interests of European citizens by promoting innovation and sustainability in the aquaculture sector.”
