Irish President mourns the loss of beloved bernese mountain Dog, Brod

Apr 23 2023 Share

Irish President Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina have expressed their sadness after the death of their beloved Bernese mountain dog, Brod. Brod was a well-known figure at Aras An Uachtarain in Dublin, where he had lived for over a decade. He had charmed many world leaders and visitors during his time at the presidential residence.

Last week, Brod and the president’s other dog, Misneach, appeared to be hesitant to greet US President Joe Biden during his historic visit to Ireland. However, they had given a warmer welcome to previous visitors, including the Princess of Wales.

In a statement, the president’s office confirmed the passing of Brod, whose name means pride, at the age of 11 years and two months. Brod had arrived at Aras an Uachtarain as an eight-week-old puppy and had become a well-loved dog by all who met him.

“He enjoyed meeting with the thousands of members of the public who came to Aras an Uachtarain over the years and he was probably one of the most photographed dogs in Ireland,” the statement read.

The spokesperson further stated that Brod’s loss would be felt by the president, Sabina, and everyone at Aras an Uachtarain, especially Misneach. The two-and-a-half-year-old dog had been Brod’s constant companion, had shared his space over recent months, and had been very attentive to Brod’s situation.

The death of Brod has been met with an outpouring of condolences from the public, and many have taken to social media to share their favorite memories of the beloved dog, including Maltese MEP and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola.

The first round of Brillanti Dance Semifinals was a group challenge, and it saw all 14 semifinalists split into three groups and work together to create an engaging piece for the judging panel.

First up was Muse, made up of duo Chloe and Miguel, Kim Ellul, Rafael Pimienta and Nicole Chetcuti, who delivered an initially emotional piece which transitioned into an exciting and upbeat choreography.

They were followed by Prism, made up of Benjamin Spiteri, the youngest semifinalist Elisa Morguello, Luke Mizzi, Charlotte Stivala and duo Mishelle and Juliana. Prism’s piece highlighted Elisa as a beam of youth, something which received mixed reactions from the judges.

And last but not least was Hex, made up of Rosario Raineri, duo Luke Brincat and Ally Mifsud, Cheryl Lofreda, Julia Vella Rosso and Federica Nicastro. Their piece to a Rosalia song was an alluring commercial number which judge Andrea Attila absolutely adored.

The group who ended up at the bottom was Prism, which meant that the bottom two dancers from that group had to battle it out in the play-off. It was down to Charlotte Stivala and Luke Mizzi, with the former securing her spot for the next semifinal.

But as the first semi-final comes to a close, it was highly evident that the chemistry and bond the dancers were building behind the scenes was going to make for an emotional roller coaster.

More dancers will have to be eliminated as the semifinals go on, making it hard for not just the dancers themselves to have their numbers thinned out, but the judges as they make their decisions.

The President Emeritus of Malta, who served as the country’s eighth President from 2008 to 2014, was nominated for the position and appointed by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, making history as the first ever President to be appointed from an opposing party.

This has only happened once in the country’s history.

On behalf of the MaltaDaily team, we would like to extend our warmest birthday wishes to the former President and hope he had a wonderful day celebrating with his loved ones.

In a heartwarming turn of events, police officials helped find Charlie, a lost dog, on the 21st of April.

The family had set up a Facebook page in their desperate attempt to find their furry friend. The search parties and police reports finally paid off when Charlie was found uninjured by police at 3 am in a field in San Gwann, looking scared and confused. Fiona, the owner of Charlie, expressed her gratitude to Sargent Parnis and PC Chantelle for finding their beloved dog. The police officers’ prompt action and dedication to finding Charlie brought joy to the family and relieved their worries.

Fiona also took the opportunity to appeal to all pet owners to get their pets familiar with their new surroundings when moving houses. This can prevent confusion and anxiety for pets who may stray away and get lost. It’s crucial for pet owners to understand the importance of keeping their pets safe, especially during moments of transition.
