Architecture Student Proposes White Rocks Transformation Project

Architecture Student Proposes White Rocks Transformation Project
Jun 26 2024 Share

Len Abela Vassallo, a university architecture student and PL councillor in Mtarfa, has unveiled an innovative project for “a state-of-the-art” Blockchain City at Malta’s coastal Pembroke White Rocks site. This new development emphasizes sustainability and modern technology, aiming to secure BREEAM certification for its social, economic, and environmental impact.

“I take a lot of pride in this project as it is an exceptionally sustainable proposal aimed at achieving BREEAM certification for what could become a leading and progressive industry in Malta.”

The project includes facilities for blockchain technology, digital finance education, housing for foreign workers, and offices for cryptocurrency companies. It also features commercial spaces with NFT galleries, restaurants, a supermarket, and a venue for crypto conventions. Additionally, there will be operational facilities for the EU and residential areas for foreign workers.

Utilizing and regenerating existing British military housing from the 1960s, the design follows a contemporary conservation approach, preserving most of the original structures. Key features include renewable energy systems, water catchment, and a curtain wall system mounted on a steel structure. The project targets carbon neutrality and self-sufficiency, celebrating Malta’s modernist heritage by preserving Richard England’s iconic hostel design with minimal demolition.

Although there are currently no governmental plans for implementation, Len’s vision showcases a proactive approach to future urban development and innovation in Malta’s evolving landscape.

The annual World’s Ugliest Dog contest, held at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California, crowned Wild Thang, an 8-year-old Pekingese, as the winner. Wild Thang won the $5,000 prize after five previous attempts.

Judge Fiona Ma praised him as a fan favorite who deserved to win for his endearing qualities. Wild Thang, who survived a virus as a puppy, has permanent damage resulting in a floppy tongue and a constantly paddling right front leg.

“He’s never had a haircut, his owner shaves his stomach, and he loves to sleep on ice packs,” Ma noted, emphasising Wild Thang’s sweet nature and love for cuddles. Ma also highlighted the importance of adopting rescue dogs.

The contest aims to celebrate the unique beauty of these dogs, not mock them. Rome, a 14-year-old one-eyed pug, took second place. Despite his bowed legs, he brings joy to hospice patients and participates in charity events for dogs.

Wild Thang has also contributed to raising funds for evacuating fellow Pekingese from Ukraine, while another competitor, Ozzie, a 10-year-old terrier mix, visits senior centres and cares for foster kittens.

Third place went to Daisy Mae, who, despite losing much of her hair, teeth, and vision over the years, has gained confidence, friends, and spunk. Most contestants, including Daisy Mae, have been rescued, showcasing the value and love these dogs bring to their communities.

7 Beach Hacks Perfect For A Hot Maltese Summer Day

7 Beach Hacks Perfect For A Hot Maltese Summer Day
Jun 26 2024 Share

Ah, summer in Malta – the sun, the sea, and the sand. There’s nothing quite like spending a day at the beach, soaking up the rays and cooling off in the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean.

But while a day at the beach is always a good idea, it can sometimes be a bit of a hassle. From lugging around heavy bags to dealing with sand in all the wrong places, beach days aren’t always as relaxing as they should be.

That’s why we’ve put together a list of beach hacks to help you make the most of your summer days out. So grab your sunscreen and your flip-flops, because it’s time to hit the beach!

Secure Your Valuables

Scared to leave your valuables unattended while you hit the water? Gain peace of mind by simply packing them in a ziplock bag and burying them in the sand under your towel. If you’re on a rocky beach, you can put them inside a nappy instead! It’s a sneaky yet effective way to outsmart any would-be thieves.

Vinegar for Jelly Stings

Jellyfish stings suck! If you’re unlucky enough to get one, and are not too keen on soothing it ‘the old natural way’, reach for the vinegar instead! Applying vinegar to the affected area can help alleviate the pain and discomfort, allowing you to get back to enjoying your day at the beach.

Freeze Aloe Gel

Sunburn or skin irritation can put a serious damper on your beach day. To combat this, freeze some aloe vera gel in an ice cube tray and keep it in your cooler. Simply pop out a frozen cube and gently rub it onto irritated areas for refreshing and soothing relief.

Bring a Fitted Sheet

Tired of getting sand all over your towel? Use a fitted sheet instead! Simply place the fitted sheet upside down on the sand and anchor the corners with bags to hold up the sides. The raised edges of the sheet will create a sand-free zone for you to relax in.

Remove Sand With Baby Powder

Sand, it’s comfy to lie on and great fun to play with, until you have to leave and it’s stuck in all the wrong places. Enter baby powder, the ultimate sandy beach essential! Just a sprinkle of this magical powder on your hands, feet, or wherever sand is clinging, and voila! It brushes off effortlessly, leaving you feeling smooth and sand-free.

Quick-Dry Your Swim Shorts

Don’t let a soggy bottom ruin your post-beach plans. To speed up the drying process of your swim shorts, wrap a towel around your waist and squat down for a while. This trick helps to absorb excess water, leaving your swimsuit drier and less irritating.

A Cooler Cooler

Keep your drinks and snacks cooler for longer by burying your cooler in the sand. The sand acts as a natural insulator, keeping the contents of your cooler chilled and refreshing, even on the hottest summer days.

Add A Little Sizzle

So there you have it, with these ingenious hacks you’ll be beaching it like a pro in no time. But why stop there when you can add a little extra sizzle to your summer?
