Former speaker Myriam Spiteri Debono emerges as the leading candidate for Malta’s next President, according to sources from Times of Malta.

Recognized for her moderate socialist beliefs, Spiteri Debono’s nomination by Prime Minister Robert Abela received no objections from opposition leader Bernard Grech.

The PN parliamentary group is expected to grant approval shortly. If confirmed, Spiteri Debono will assume office on April 4, succeeding George Vella.

In response to inquiries, Spiteri Debono emphasized the importance of an official announcement and parliamentary consensus. Despite previous nominations, such as for the Standards Commission job, she remains committed to her newfound presidential candidacy. Notably, she has garnered respect across party lines for her acknowledgment of pressing issues, including the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

The nomination’s approval would conclude months of speculation regarding the presidency. Various other candidates, including European Commissioner Helena Dalli and current Speaker Anglu Farrugia, have been considered.

Constitutional amendments now require a two-thirds majority for presidential appointments, marking a significant change from previous procedures.
