The Ministry for Social Policy and Children’s Rights has received the report from the Independent Inquiry led by Emeritus Judge Lawrence Quintano. The inquiry looked into the social services provided to the late Nicolette Ghirxi.
The report noted how the National Statistics Office found that, in 2023, there were 3,589 persons who reported that they were going through domestic violence or used services created for this reason.
75.4% were women whereas 24.6% were men. The report comes with a number of recommendations that could aid victims of domestic violence such as;
Holding ‘awareness campaigns’ by the Social Services Department to help people recognise the dangers and signs;
Holding the risk assessment with whoever puts forth a report. ‘It is clear that a number of persons do not do it, but it is better for it to take place with the option of opt out’;
The choosing of an easy 3-digit number which is broadcasted on media for people to contact easily;
The expansion of the STOP service for aggressors;
Lessons in the 4th and 5th year secondary school classes on equality between the genders and the unacceptability of violence;
Men having the right to the same protections when they put forth their complaints;
The reduction of the general public’s prejudice against the alleged victims;
The establishment of a committee which keeps an eye on all developments regarding this sector. This could include a representative from the police, the social services department and court administration.
