Infrastructural Works In Hal Ghaxaq To Improve Electricity, Water Services

Infrastructural upgrades are underway in Ħal Għaxaq to enhance electricity and water services for the locality’s 6,000 residents. These projects, undertaken by Enemalta and the Water Services Corporation, aim to deliver a more stable electricity supply and improved drinking water and sewage systems.

During a site visit with Energy Minister Miriam Dalli and Għaxaq Mayor Karl Boxall, officials emphasized the collaboration between entities and local councils to minimize disruptions while addressing community needs. “Proper planning and cooperation allow us to complete these essential projects efficiently,” said Minister Dalli.

Enemalta is reinforcing the electricity distribution system by laying 6.4 km of new underground cables, part of a larger initiative involving 60 km of cables across 21 localities in Malta and Gozo. Additional work includes commissioning two new substations and upgrading low-voltage networks to enhance flexibility and reliability.

The Water Services Corporation is finalizing upgrades to the sewage and potable water infrastructure to meet current and future demand. These improvements are expected to be completed within weeks.

Mayor Boxall expressed gratitude to residents for their cooperation, acknowledging the temporary inconvenience. The total investment in these upgrades exceeds €2.4 million. Enemalta Chairman Ryan Fava and Water Services Corporation CEO Karl Cilia were also present during the visit.

8.96 Million Passengers Through Malta Airport In 2024

Malta International Airport (MIA) welcomed 8.96 million passengers in 2024, marking a 14.8% increase from 2023 and achieving the third-highest growth rate in its history.

August was the busiest month with 983,182 passenger movements, but March saw the strongest growth, with traffic increasing by 30% year-on-year, surpassing 600,000 passengers for the first time.

Winter passenger traffic grew by 21%, outpacing summer’s 12% increase, and seat occupancy reached an all-time high of 86%.

MIA CEO Alan Borg highlighted Malta’s continued popularity among travellers, with the airport positioned as a leader among southern European counterparts.

Borg noted promising growth for 2025, with 9.3 million passengers expected and a summer schedule connecting Malta to 109 destinations.

Investments of €70 million are planned for 2025, including enhancements to the Schengen arrivals corridor and baggage reclaim area, as well as the unveiling of a new VIP Terminal and completion of Apron 8 South’s second phase, adding four new aircraft stands.

Malta Tourism Authority CEO Carlo Micallef praised the collaboration between MTA and MIA, which boosted off-peak capacity and reduced seasonality.

MIA also emphasised sustainability initiatives, including a photovoltaic farm expected to generate 5.1 million kWh of clean energy, supporting its goal of achieving carbon neutrality.

Maltese Youths Can Now Benefit From Discounts All Over EU

At a press conference, Parliamentary Secretary Keith Azzopardi Tanti, alongside Aġenzija Żgħażagħ and the European Youth Card Association, announced the launch of the European Youth Card campaign.

This initiative aims to provide young people in Malta with access to over 22,000 discounts in 42 countries, covering education, health, travel, and entertainment, while also promoting mobility and training opportunities.

Currently, there are over 10,000 cardholders in Malta and more than 7 million across Europe. The card is designed to foster collaboration among governments, organisations, and associations, offering practical benefits to youth while creating new opportunities for development.

The initiative also emphasises the importance of giving young people the resources to grow and contribute to society. Miriam Teuma, CEO of Aġenzija Żgħażagħ, highlighted that the card helps young people unlock their potential by providing them with tangible benefits and opportunities.

Manel Sánchez, Director of the European Youth Card Association, stated that the card promotes inclusivity and supports personal and professional growth.

The campaign reflects a broader effort to enhance youth mobility and access to resources across Europe, with a focus on improving the lives and prospects of young people in Malta and beyond.
