Council Motion To Name Floriana Pitch After Il-Lullu

Taking to social media, Floriana Nationalist Party councillor James Aaron Ellul announced that, on Thursday 14th March, he plans on putting forth a motion to name the King George V Garden pitch after Mark Piscopo, known as il-Lullu.

Mark Piscopo was a beloved kit manager of Malta’s national football team who passed away at the age of 52 back in June of 2022.

Il-Lullu was admired for giving his heart and soul to the game of football, always with an infectious smile.

‘The pitch serves a number of sport functions’, wrote James Aaron Ellul, ‘but it primarily serves as a football pitch – the sport which Mark was so involved in and remained beloved for, not just by the people of Floriana but even all those involved in the sport on a national level.’

He described Mark as having distilled so much love for football in Malta’s new generations through his work and character.

Do you agree with James Aaron Ellul?

Instagram Was Downloaded More Than TikTok In 2023

Instagram Was Downloaded More Than TikTok In 2023
Mar 13 2024 Share

In 2023, Instagram surpassed TikTok as the most downloaded app amidst US regulatory scrutiny over security concerns.

Sensor Tower reported Instagram’s downloads rose by 20% to 768 million, while TikTok’s increased by only 4% to 733 million. Analysts credit Instagram’s success to its reels feature and traditional social media functions.

TikTok, launched by ByteDance in 2016, gained momentum after its merger with Musical.ly in 2018, becoming the most downloaded app in the US.

Instagram’s introduction of reels in 2020 mirrored TikTok’s approach. By 2023, Instagram’s monthly active users reached 1.47 billion, welcoming 13 million new users in the last quarter alone, while TikTok saw a decrease to 1.12 billion users.

Despite fewer users, TikTok boasts higher engagement, with users spending an average of 95 minutes compared to Instagram’s 62 minutes. TikTok’s algorithm allows content creators to achieve rapid viral success, incentivized by the Creator Fund.

Unlike Instagram, TikTok pays creators directly through this fund. Concerns over TikTok’s Chinese ownership led to bipartisan legislative efforts to force ByteDance to divest from the app. Despite TikTok’s defense of free speech, allegations of data privacy violations persist, fueling regulatory action and public skepticism.

New Bone Density Machine In St Vincent De Paul Inaugurated

New Bone Density Machine In St Vincent De Paul Inaugurated
Mar 13 2024 Share

During a press conference at San Vinċenz de Paul, officials unveiled a new investment aimed at enhancing the well-being of seniors: a state-of-the-art Bone Density scanner. Health and Active Aging Minister Jo Etienne Abela, along with Parliamentary Secretary for Active Aging Malcolm Paul Agius Galea, presided over the inauguration.

The scanner operates by conducting bone density scans, assessing mineral levels in bones and offering crucial insights to medical professionals regarding potential bone mass reduction. This condition renders bones more prone to fractures, necessitating preventive measures. The investment aims to address the increasing demand for bone scans, estimated to serve around 70 patients weekly at San Vinċenz, ultimately leading to more streamlined healthcare services.

Minister Abela emphasized that this new addition complements existing services at San Vinċenz, benefiting not only residents but also elderly individuals residing in nursing homes and within the broader community. He underscored the investment’s dual purpose: preventing serious injuries and promoting individual health, thereby avoiding invasive procedures that may lead to long-term disabilities.

“This underscores our government’s commitment not only to equipping medical professionals with cutting-edge tools but also to ensuring the well-being of our elderly population,” Minister Abela affirmed.

Parliamentary Secretary Agius Galea highlighted the substantial efforts being made to enhance elderly care, both within San Vinċenz and throughout the wider community.

“Prevention remains paramount in healthcare, making screenings such as bone density checks invaluable. Early identification of the need for supplements to fortify bones can significantly mitigate the risk of fractures—a prevalent concern among the elderly that often precipitates further health complications,” concluded Parliamentary Secretary Agius Galea.
