Following the shocking event wherein an injured migrant worker was left on the roadside by his employer, Malta’s Chamber of Architects has issued a warning of how such behaviour will continue until all contractors are required to possess a license to work. The Chamber stated that the construction industry has hit yet another low, with this latest incident a ‘stark reminder that some industry operators are yet to reach basic levels of responsible behaviour grounded in humanity and compassion.’
Police have allegedly questioned one of the two shareholders and directors of the J&G Farrugia Contractors Limited company Glen Farrugia. It is unclear whether Farrugia is the employer himself or a spokesperson in regards the issue. The chamber said that the quality leap required will never be made unless all contractors are required to possess a license to operate. ‘The industry must send a strong signal to “cowboy” operators that all its main stakeholders shall adopt a zero-tolerance policy towards behaviour which is inhumane, exploitative, and negligent to its labour force.’
