Just a few hours after ballot boxes were opened and counting officially began, indications from within the Labour Party suggest that Labour have won the 2022 general election by a margin of around 41,000 votes.
The news was broken by Labour Party news platform One News, which also stated that this would be the largest electoral win since Malta’s independence, with the Labour Party securing 55.9% of votes and the Nationalist Party 41.7%.
Today’s general election win is Labour’s third consecutive general election win after securing a historic victory back in 2013, with the 2022 election being Robert Abela’s first win as Labour Party leader.
Earlier today, Nationalist Party leader Bernard Grech vowed to remain PN leader and contest the party’s leadership despite such a significant loss. As per Nationalist Party statute, a leadership race will have to take place following the loss of a general election.
