Steve Zammit Lupi will serve as mayor of Żebbuġ as an independent, following an agreement with Labour and Nationalist Party councillors.
Zammit Lupi confirmed the bipartisan support in a statement, emphasising that he will remain an independent mayor committed to transcending partisanship in his work for the locality.
The Labour Party also released a statement affirming their councillors’ support for Zammit Lupi, noting that the agreement prioritises the best interests of Żebbuġ.
It was agreed that Labour’s electoral manifesto for Żebbuġ will guide the council’s efforts, although Zammit Lupi mentioned he has his own manifesto and will consider any beneficial ideas for the locality.
Joseph Agius, a newly elected Labour councillor with the highest votes among PL candidates, will serve as the deputy mayor. Zammit Lupi garnered significant support in the recent local council elections, receiving 2,342 first-count votes. His popularity also benefited his mother, Lillibeth Zammit Lupi, who won a seat on the same council.
The council will comprise four Labour seats and three Nationalist seats. Despite his overwhelming vote count, Zammit Lupi’s role as mayor depended on securing an agreement with one of the major parties, which he successfully achieved.
