Illustrator transforms Iconic Landmarks with a Playful Twist

Robin Yayla, an Istanbul-based illustrator, offers a fresh and playful take on iconic landmarks through his vibrant artwork. Known for transforming familiar scenes, Robin combines his love for travel with his passion for drawing, bringing a new perspective to well-known structures.

One of Robin’s standout pieces features Spiderman perched on London’s Tower Bridge. Another notable work reinterprets the Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku, Azerbaijan, where the building’s sweeping curves are transformed into Marilyn Monroe’s famous white dress billowing in the wind. These illustrations not only reflect Robin’s artistic talent but also his ability to inject personality into architecture, making viewers look at these landmarks in a whole new light. 

By infusing his playful style into scenic landmarks, Robin encourages us to see the world through a more colourful lens. Whether he’s altering the shape of a building or adding a fictional character to a cityscape.

In 2023, female graduates made up 60.1% of tertiary-level graduates in Malta, outnumbering males in all levels of tertiary education.

For every 100 male graduates, there were 151 female graduates.

The largest proportion of graduates attained a qualification at ISCED Level 6 (Bachelor’s or equivalent), accounting for 52.5%, followed by 34.9% achieving an ISCED Level 7 (Master’s or equivalent).

Most graduates (67.9%) were aged between 20 and 29, with 1,526 foreign graduates representing 26.2% of the total. Non-EU citizens made up 54.5% of foreign graduates.

Full-time programme graduates accounted for 71.9%, while part-time graduates increased by 16.8% compared to the previous year.

The majority of graduates in Bachelor’s and Master’s programs were Maltese (81.1% and 77.5%, respectively), while foreign nationals dominated in Short-cycle tertiary education (67.8%) and Doctoral programs (60.3%).

The most popular field of study was ‘Business, administration and law’ (29.7%), followed by ‘Health and welfare’ (23.2%).

‘Agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and veterinary’ was the least popular, making up only 0.2%. In STEM fields, 14.2% of graduates qualified, with female STEM graduates increasing by 10.1%, while male graduates decreased by 6.7%.

A recent survey by anti-bullying NGO bBrave revealed alarming statistics about workplace bullying in Malta.

The survey found that 64% of participants believe workplace bullying exists, 40% experienced it personally in the past year, and 20% face harassment daily. These findings underline the need for urgent action.

In response, the Partit Nazzjonalista (PN) has submitted a Private Member’s Bill in Parliament advocating zero tolerance for workplace bullying. The proposed law, spearheaded by Shadow Ministers Ivan Castillo and Graziella Attard Previ, aims to address the issue comprehensively.

It mandates that companies with over 49 employees implement anti-bullying policies, which will define workplace bullying, outline procedures to report it, and enforce disciplinary measures against offenders, regardless of rank.

The PN highlighted the significant toll bullying takes on employees’ mental health and productivity. According to the survey, 73% of victims reported increased stress, 58% suffered mental health issues, and 9% resorted to self-harm or experienced suicidal thoughts.

Workplace bullying also has a broader economic impact, contributing to 4% of Malta’s GDP loss.

“Doing nothing is not an option,” said Ivan Castillo. “This bill aims to ensure every worker feels safe, valued, and empowered.” Graziella Attard Previ added, “People spend much of their lives at work; a healthy workplace is not a luxury—it is a fundamental right.”

She emphasized the importance of protecting vulnerable groups, including women, non-Maltese workers, individuals with disabilities, and the LGBTIQ+ community.

Public Works projects in recent months have contributed to Malta’s progress in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

During a conference marking the closure of the European Union’s Technical Support Instrument programme, led by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the Public Works Department was praised for its efforts to address and work towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In the conference, Tatyana Teplova, Head of Division at the OECD, described the Public Works Department’s policy approach and its ongoing projects as a “success and a model for other entities and departments.”

In his address, Parliamentary Secretary for Public Works Omar Farrugia explained how every project led by the Public Works Department is driven by a commitment to “sustainable development, ensuring that our projects are practical and aligned with broader SDGs and long-term goals.”

Parliamentary Secretary Farrugia highlighted several projects through which the Public Works Department has addressed key SDGs. “The Ta’ Qali National Park project is not only the largest recreational and green space in the country but also a platform for Maltese artists to showcase their work and talents.”

Farrugia also mentioned other environmental projects, including the installation of 376 new solar-powered infrastructures across 20 localities, maintenance work on several reservoirs to ensure rainwater is conserved and used by Maltese farmers, and the opening of Ġnien il-Kunsill in Birżebbuġa, an inclusive space designed to welcome children with disabilities.

The Parliamentary Secretary concluded by stating that the programme launched three years ago to embed the Green Transformation Policy into Public Works Department projects has firmly placed sustainability at the heart of the department’s operations.
