Four New Green Spaces For Families In Malta

Green Space Initiative: Transforming Development Zones in Malta

Malta’s urban landscape is set for a transformation as spaces designated for 30 apartment blocks are repurposed into recreational areas for families. Instead of erecting high-rise buildings, these zones will become vibrant green spaces conveniently located near residential, work, and social hubs.

Prime Minister Robert Abela has announced these initiatives with a focus on enhancing Malta’s natural environment, underscoring the government’s commitment to its promises. This legislative term will witness the largest endeavor in creating open spaces across the country, benefitting approximately 7,000 families in areas such as Ħal Luqa, Ħal Kirkop, Ħal Lija, and San Ġiljan.

This year, the government aims to allocate over 20,000 square meters for public enjoyment, with the initial four projects accounting for around 8,000 square meters of green space. Utilizing government-developable spaces, Prime Minister Abela stresses the importance of prioritizing open areas alongside essential infrastructure like schools and healthcare facilities.

Minister for Energy, the Environment, and the Regeneration of the Port, Miriam Dalli, emphasizes the alignment of these projects with the aspirations of Maltese families for a higher quality of life. Project Green, in collaboration with the private sector, aims to introduce sustainable practices such as energy and water efficiency and biodiversity regeneration.

Minister for Culture and Electoral Manifesto Implementation, Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, highlights the identification of 8,000 square meters of green spaces across four localities, previously valued at nearly 20 million euros. With initiatives like Project Green, these areas in Ħal Luqa, Ħal Kirkop, Ħal Lija, and San Ġiljan will soon become accessible havens for communities, aligning with the government’s commitment to enriching Malta’s urban fabric.
