Democrat Sarah McBride made history on Tuesday as the first transgender person elected to Congress.

The Delaware native won the state’s only seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, replacing fellow Democrat Lisa Blunt Rochester, who also made history by becoming Delaware’s first female senator.

McBride secured 57.7% of the vote, defeating Republican opponent John Whalen III, who garnered 42.3%. McBride’s campaign raised over $3.5 million, while Whalen raised under $7,000 by mid-October.

In an interview with CBS, McBride emphasised her focus on key issues like affordable child care, paid family leave, housing, healthcare, and reproductive freedom.

At 34, McBride has been active in politics for years. She interned at the White House during President Obama’s second term while earning a degree in government and American politics from American University.

In 2020, she became the first openly transgender person elected to Delaware’s state senate, where she prioritised education, families, and Medicaid.

After her victory, McBride expressed gratitude to her supporters on X, reaffirming her commitment to reproductive freedom, paid leave, affordable child care, and ensuring healthcare and housing access for all, while promoting an inclusive democracy.

‘Your tiny heart stopped beating and our whole world stopped spinning all at once. I did everything to make sure you had the best home to grow in, but you stopped growing.’

‘But know that from the moment I knew you were there, even before any tests agreed with me, we were so excited to be your parents.’

‘But my favourite phrase has always been “everything happens for a reason” so I have to think about that now more than ever. And although it doesn’t make sense right now we have to believe that one day, it will.’

‘We love you and thanks for the joy you brought into our lives, even if it was for a little while.’

‘Thanks to everyone who’s been there a little or a lot through this hard time. We appreciate every single one of you. Huge thanks to the staff at Mater Dei emergency, gynea emergency & Obstetrics Ward 2, you guys are rockstars.’

On behalf of the MaltaDaily team, we wish all the love to the couple x

Pop star Sabrina Carpenter registered more voters during her “Short n’ Sweet” arena tour than any other artist partnering with HeadCount, a nonprofit focused on voter registration.

Carpenter helped register 35,814 voters during her 2024 tour, surpassing all other artists working with HeadCount. In addition, she had over 263,000 voter engagements, including people checking their registration status and finding polling locations.

Carpenter announced her collaboration with HeadCount before her tour began, which included 23 shows leading up to Election Day.

Her efforts contributed to a record-breaking year for the organisation, which registered over 450,000 new voters and engaged more than a million people. HeadCount’s success is attributed to artists like Carpenter, Green Day, and Ariana Grande, who use their influence to connect with younger fans.

Over 80 percent of the newly registered voters are from Generation Z or millennials.

This push for voter engagement comes as many celebrities join the 2024 election campaigns. For instance, Beyoncé endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris and appeared at a rally in Houston, Texas, alongside other artists performing to increase support for Harris and encourage voter turnout.
