Hundreds in protest in Venice after return of giant cruise ships

Several hundred residents in Venice stated that they were deceived by the Italian government as huge cruise liners and vessels docked in the city’s port on Sunday. The citizens were surprised when a cruise liner sailed into the city’s lagoon for the first time since the pandemic, despite Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s declaration that the ships would be banned form the historical centre.

Activist leader of ‘No Grandi Navi’ (No Big Ships’ Tomasso Cacciari stated that the Italian government deceived not only citizens but also newspapers and public opinion around the world. A counter protest however occurred, supporting the livelihoods of people who depend on the cruise industry and have been negatively impacted by the pandemic.

New family park in Bormla by SportMalta announced

Parliament Secretary for Youth Sport and Voluntary Organisations Clifton Grima announced a new family park in Bormla in the proximity of Cottonera Sports Complex. The project will be undertaken by SportMalta, with the Parliament Secretary stating that the site chosen is currently abandoned and will thus give new breath to Cottonera’s families and residents.

Grima stated that the government’s aim is to innovate new ideas for the public, with SportMalta taking the lead in proposing the concept. This will give people the chance and the space to spend their free time in a quality park.

The 20,000 m2 zone will be regenerated to offer recreational space for families in Malta. Several activities will also be included, such as walking trails, zippiness and archery, targeting a multitude of ages. The project will also keep the impact on surrounding areas to a minimum.

Bormla’s mayor, Alison Zerafa Civelli, embraced the new project and stated that Bormla is rich in history, culture and enough space for recreational purposes. SportMalta chairman Luciano Busuttil also explained how SportMalta will be embarking on such a different project to offer a park for everyone.

Hibernians FC stadium renamed to Tony Bezzina Stadium

Following a suggestion by team manager and right hand man Jesmond Abela, the Hibernains Stadium in Kordin has been renamed ‘Tony Bezzina Stadium’ this morning. The news came from the Annual General meeting which occurred virtually. Tony Bezzina would have been President of Hibernians FC for 43 years on the 11th of June, having been elected for the job in 1978.

Following his passing on 15th of March 2021, the decision to rename the stadium was seconded by Vice President of the club Alex Montebello. Ranier Bezzina, Tony’s son, was named President of Hibernians FC for the first time to follow in his father’s footsteps.

€1.6 million reconstruction of Gozo ferry quays announced by Ministers Ian Borg and Clint Camilleri

Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Ian Borg and Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri announced that a €1.6 million reconstruction of one of the Gozo ferry quays at Cirkewwa has been finished. The reconstruction saw the instalment of higher decks, fender blocks with fall protection, new mooring bollards and emergency ladders.

These new instalments are designed to ensure the safety of the mooring crews, passengers and sailors at work. Minister Ian Borg stated that these maritime infrastructures will also aid in increasing the efficiency of routes between Malta and Gozo. Extensive reconstruction was done on both land and under the sea to ensure maximum safety.
