Journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia was assassinated on this day five years ago outside her home in Bidnija. The murder that continues to haunt the island to this very day occurred on the 16th of October 2017 when the journalist was driving her leased Peugeot 108 near her home.

A car bomb had been placed in the vehicle and, upon exploding, killed the journalist instantly and left the car in several pieces in nearby fields.

Daphne’s son, Matthew Caruana Galizia, reported how he rushed outside and found his ‘mother’s body parts all around [him].’ The Caruana Galizia home had not been under police guard since 2010, except during elections.

Her family went on to criticise Maltese authorities for doing nothing against a growing culture of impunity, with calls for resignation against the then Prime Minister Joseph Muscat also surfacing.

The Prime Minister condemned the attack, despite calls for resignation. Other condolences also came from Archbishop Charles Scicluna, President Marie Louise Coleiro and even Pope Francis, who said that he was praying for Malta.

Joseph Muscat later revealed that the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation was also asked to help in the police investigation, with a police forensic investigation tam from th Netherlands also helping out.

Following the assassination, Maltese businessman Yorgen Fenech was agreed on the 20th of November 2019 in connection with the murder. On February 23rd 2021, Vince Muscat, was sentenced to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to the murder of the journalist.

On Friday 14th October, two days before the 5th year anniversary, Alfred and George Degiorgio reversed their not-guilty plea in regards to the assassination of the journalist. They have just received a 40 year prison sentence after admitting to the killing.

Who was Daphne Caruana Galizia? 5 years since her Assassination

Today, October 16th 2022, marks the 5 year anniversary from the brutal assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

Daphne was an active journalist, columnist and writer for over 30 years in Malta, having been pivotal in uncovering several instances of corruption in the local scene.

The mother of three sons with her husband Peter – Matthew, Andrew and Paul – Daphne was more than just an editor and columnist. A writer with a passion for food and writing about it, especially in the magazine ‘Taste & Flair’ which she ran, Caruana Galizia was a notable figure on the islands given her investigative reporting on governmental corruption, money laundering and organised crime.

All throughout her career she was subject to multiple instances of intimidation and threats, with her son Matthew saying that threatening calls and letters were almost a daily occurrence.

Her house was also set on fire twice, once when the family was sleeping inside, and many of her pets were targeted or outright murdered. However, Daphne never gave up her mission to report on what she saw to be corrupt.

She also never applied for any awards, never nominated herself or asked anyone to nominate her. Despite this, she won many posthumous awards and honours following her assassination. The assassination was made known internationally, with many eyes watching as the trials of those involved continue to this very day.

Mater Dei patients will soon be able to spend time with their pets in special cabins
Oct 15 2022 Share

In the coming days, patients at Mater Dei hospital will be able to spend some time with their pets in specialised ‘pet cabins’.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health Chris Fearne announced this during a programme of Pjazza on ONE TV. Fearne explained that such cabins were already in place three years ago and had to come to a halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

He went on to state that patients have been waiting for the initiative for a long time and will now be able to spend some time with their pets whilst being treated.

The Deputy Prime Minister stated that everyone who has a pet understands how important they are to them, comparing a visit from one’s pet to that of a family member.
