Non-Binary Persons To Be Able to Legally Change Gender on Documents

Non-Binary Persons To Be Able to Legally Change Gender on Documents
Jun 26 2024 Share

Non-binary individuals in Malta will now have the right to change the gender registered at their birth.

This means that every Maltese citizen can request to alter their registered gender to female, male, or non-binary, and, if desired, change their name to match their chosen gender identity.
This development follows the granting of similar rights to transgender individuals in 2018.

The amendments to the Gender Identity, Gender Expression, and Sex Characteristics Act have been submitted to Parliament for a second reading. Non-binary gender refers to those who do not identify strictly as male or female. Individuals aged 16 and over can change their gender without parental consent.

In 2017, Identity Malta adjusted its internal systems to include the ‘X’ gender option on its documents. If the proposed amendments are approved, the Act will specify that for non-binary individuals, the gender identifier on any official document will be ‘X’. Parliamentary Secretary Rebecca Buttiġieġ proposed the amendment. Nationalist MP Graziella Attard Previ highlighted that current Maltese laws benefit only Maltese citizens and exclude foreign LGBTIQ+ individuals, which she deemed discriminatory.

She called for consistency and inclusivity for non-Maltese LGBTIQ+ individuals to prevent further marginalisation.

Architecture Student Proposes White Rocks Transformation Project

Architecture Student Proposes White Rocks Transformation Project
Jun 26 2024 Share

Len Abela Vassallo, a university architecture student and PL councillor in Mtarfa, has unveiled an innovative project for “a state-of-the-art” Blockchain City at Malta’s coastal Pembroke White Rocks site. This new development emphasizes sustainability and modern technology, aiming to secure BREEAM certification for its social, economic, and environmental impact.

“I take a lot of pride in this project as it is an exceptionally sustainable proposal aimed at achieving BREEAM certification for what could become a leading and progressive industry in Malta.”

The project includes facilities for blockchain technology, digital finance education, housing for foreign workers, and offices for cryptocurrency companies. It also features commercial spaces with NFT galleries, restaurants, a supermarket, and a venue for crypto conventions. Additionally, there will be operational facilities for the EU and residential areas for foreign workers.

Utilizing and regenerating existing British military housing from the 1960s, the design follows a contemporary conservation approach, preserving most of the original structures. Key features include renewable energy systems, water catchment, and a curtain wall system mounted on a steel structure. The project targets carbon neutrality and self-sufficiency, celebrating Malta’s modernist heritage by preserving Richard England’s iconic hostel design with minimal demolition.

Although there are currently no governmental plans for implementation, Len’s vision showcases a proactive approach to future urban development and innovation in Malta’s evolving landscape.
