A restoration project valued at €10 million in EU funds focusing on the restoration and rebuilding of rubble walls (‘ħitan tas-sejjieħ’) in Gozo has finally been completed.
Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri, together with Parliamentary Secretary for EU Funds Chris Bonett announced the completion of the restoration project, which saw over 30 kilometres of rubble walls built across Gozo.
The project was conducted by the ‘EkoGħawdex’ Directorate within the Ministry for Gozo and was financed by €10 million in European funds. Starting in 2021, various Gozitan villages including Xagħra, Nadur, Xewkija, Għajnsielem, Rabat and more benefitted from extensive works on around 40 roads.
The Minister explained how this project, co-financed by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development, saw kilometres of broken down rubbles walls restored and returned to their original glory. Camilleri went on to highlight how such a project is considered one of national importance and transforms Gozo into an ecological island which contributes to the sustainability of farmers in Gozo.
