Bernard Grech has just announced his resignation from the Nationalist Party leadership, announcing that the process to choose a new leader will immediately begin with a meeting on Wednesday.

In the mean time, people started to express their opinion about the resignation.

Many thanked him for his service as leader of the party and the Opposition, saying that he will always have their respect.

Others however said that it was time for Grech to step down and make way for new leadership so that the party can have a new electoral chance.

Over 2,300 Non-Eu Citizens Fleeing Ukraine Found Temporary Protection In Malta By April 2025

As of the end of April 2025, 4.26 million non-EU citizens who fled Ukraine due to Russia’s ongoing war of aggression had been granted temporary protection status across European Union member states.

According to Eurostat, the countries hosting the highest number of beneficiaries were Germany (1,189,355 people; 27.9% of the EU total), followed by Poland (986,925; 23.2%) and Czechia (370,600; 8.7%).

Compared to March 2025, the EU recorded a slight overall increase of 2,525 individuals under temporary protection in April, marking a 0.1% rise.

The largest increases were seen in Sweden (+9,345; +34.6%), largely due to the late renewal of protection statuses that had expired in March.

Czechia continued to have the highest number of temporary protection beneficiaries per capita, with 34 per 1,000 residents, followed by Poland (26.9) and Estonia (24.7).

The EU average stood at 9.5 per 1,000 people.

While figures remained relatively stable in smaller EU nations, Malta hosted 2,305 beneficiaries of temporary protection as of April 2025

Bernard Grech Thanks His Wife And Children For Sacrifices During Challenging Times as PN Leader

When addressing the media, Bernard Grech thanked his wife Anne Marie and his two children, Neil and Maria, for making big sacrifices during his tenure as PN leader.

He went on to describe this period in his life as very difficult, after he lost both parents and also former PN MP Karl Gouder died on Tuesday, two days after announcing his intention to run for the post of party general secretary, things that made his experience as a leader more difficult.

He vowed to stay on as opposition leader until a new leader is agreed upon and went on to thank everyone for such an honourable experience.

Bernard Grech has confirmed that he will resigning from his position as Leader of the Nationalist Party.

During his speech, he highlighted all the work he and his team did during the European Parliament and Local Council elections as well as serving as an ‘effective opposition.’

He said that he will be staying as PN Leader until a new leader is elected. He said that whoever will follow in his stead he is sure will be what the party needs and what the Maltese people need as Opposition.

A meeting of the Executive Committee of the Partit Nazzjonalista has been called for Wednesday 11th June 2025 to immediately being the formal process of appointing a new leader.
