Ban On ‘KANT’ Discrimination Against Maltese, Says PBS Executive

Ban On 'KANT' Discrimination Against Maltese, Says PBS Executive
Mar 6 2025 Share

Speaking to TVM News, Executive Head of Public Broadcasting Services (PBS), Keith Chetcuti, confirmed that PBS is in discussions to appeal the EBU’s decision, arguing that the song chosen by the Maltese public should remain unchanged.

Chetcuti described the decision as discriminatory against the Maltese language, noting that ‘KANT’ is the only censored word in the song.

He said that PBS remains firm in ensuring that Malta’s chosen entry is the one that competes at Eurovision. If necessary, slight modifications may be made, provided the song’s essence—endorsed by the Maltese public—remains intact.

Social media users have pointed out that ‘KANT’ is a legitimate Maltese word and should not be censored simply because its pronunciation resembles an offensive English term.

Talks are reportedly underway with the singer and songwriters to explore the possibility of minor adjustments that would satisfy the EBU while still allowing the song to compete in Eurovision.
