Heat wave to persist into next week

It seems as though there will be yet another week of heat, sweat and sleepless nights hitting the AC button as the heat is only set to stay as high or get higher. Summer started with a scorching 41 degrees celsius today, but the heat is not expected to reduce soon. According to the Met Office, the coming days will be hot and sunny, with temperatures in the high 30s, feeling like 40 degrees and above.

And if that wasn’t enough, for Tuesday’s public holiday the temperature is set to reach a new high at 38 degrees, with this repeating on Thursday. Health authorities continue to emphasise the importance of safety, staying hydrated and avoiding the intense sun light as UV increase as well. Not a great time to be a winter lover.

Summer works ban breached 12 times

Since the summer ban on excavation and demolition works came into effect last week, there have been 12 violations of the rule reported. The ‘summer break’ applies to specific streets and localities which are identified as tourist areas, with the ban being in effect between June 15th and September 30th. 14 complaints were received by the Building and Construction Authority in the first two days, but the reports seemingly stopped after that.

Works were found underway in 12 sites in Sliema, St. Julian’s and Swieqi, despite the rule. All site managers complied immediately with the inspection orders to stop the work. BCA chief officer of building code, police and EU affairs Michael Ferry revealed that fines of up to €5,000 will be issued should works persist. The list of areas which fall under the summer work ban territory can be viewed on the Planning Authority’s website.

€6 million investment into synthetic turf for 68 football clubs

68 football clubs in Malta and Gozo will be benefitting from a €6 million investment into synthetic turf for football grounds and pitches. This was announced during a conference at the Centenary Stadium by MFA President Bjorn Vassallo, Parliamentary Secretary for Sport Clifton Grima, Minister for Inclusion and Social Wellbeing Julia Farrugia Portelli and Permanent Secretary Matthew Vella.

Vassallo expressed his content about the investment, stating that the football pitch and sport facilities are the home for many players, athletes and all those committed to the community. He added that this is a precious moment for the sport community as Malta’s youth can grow up in an environment which is safe and provides opportunity to improve their sporting lifestyle and career.

The Permanent Secretary stated that sport gives order and vision to a person’s life. He stated how when witnessing such investments, he is ensured that Malta is investing in a strong society and holistic education. Clifton Grima stated that these investments show a clear vision the government has undertaken.

This vision is one that seeks to work with the sports sector by allowing them to come forward with tangible prospects, for which the government will provide all the necessary aid. Minister Julia Farrugia Portelli added that the €6 million investment will see a huge leap in quality in sport and in how the Maltese view sport disciplines overall.

Man creates YouTube channel to help kids growing up without dads

Rob Kenney, a man from Washington, opened a YouTube channel to create video tutorials for kids who grew up without a father. Kenney himself grew up without a dad and felt the pain such kids go through. So he created ‘Dad, how do I?’, which is a channel dedicated completely to teaching kids the basics of life.

The channel offers a range of tutorials from planting grass seed to unclogging toilets, from inserting ceiling fans and the basics of managing money. As of writing this article, Kenney’s channel boasts 3.47 million subscribers. His work gained popularity, even having a guest podcast with the likes of Kevin Hart. Kenney is bringing knowledge and joy to millions, whether or not they were raised by a father or not.
