Heat dome set to cover Malta at 39°C as summer officially starts

Heat dome set to cover Malta at 39°C as summer officially starts
Jun 21 2022 Share

We can officially say that summer has started as the seasons shift to the one Malta is most renowned for. And the return is set to come with a blazing week as temperatures are set to feel like a whopping 39°C.

Today’s temperature is set to feel like 32°C, which is already quite hot for summer day 001. However, as the week progresses, the temperatures are only set to increase up to the 39th mark.

And the nights are not set to give us much respite as they will still register a blistering 27°C. These are being caused by a persisting high pressure over the Central Mediterranean as other European countries battle heatwaves and even forest fires.

Such heat domes, as they are known, occur when high pressure in the atmosphere forces air down, compressing and warming it. The warm air is trapped and thus forms a dome like phenomenon.

The UV index will also strike at a formidable 11 throughout the week, and thus protection from sunlight is highly recommended along with staying hydrated. People are urged to stay inside at midday as Malta braces for a blistering week.

Parliament unanimously approves femicide bill

Parliament unanimously approves femicide bill
Jun 21 2022 Share

A bill which will add femicide as an aggravating offence to the Criminal Code has passed all stages of parliament, with unanimous approval at Third Reading stage.

President George Vella is now required to sign the bill for it to become law after parliament approved it on Monday afternoon. The bill was amended during committee stage to clarify that the perpetrator could be anyone, whether male, female or otherwise.

Justice Minister Jonathan Attard put forward an amendment after several Nationalist MPs brought up the issue during the second reading.

For a homicide to be considered as femicide in court, the victim must be a woman and must have been killed because she was a woman. Domestic violence, honour killings, religious practices such as genital mutilation, sexual abuse and misogynistic intentions all fall under the law.

The bill was put forth following the murder of Paulina Dembska earlier this year by Abner Aquilina. The murder prompted many women’s rights activists to push for femicide to become a law.

Female cockroaches clone themselves when they don’t find mates

Female cockroaches clone themselves when they don’t find mates

Speaking to MaltaDaily, Arnold Sciberras, a.k.a The Exterminator, explained how cockroaches get down and dirty – and it sounds like something straight out of a sci-fi movie.

Although cockroaches do have sexual intercourse between males and females, Arnold explained how females can do just as well without having to find a mate. Females between them can still have, in Arnold’s words, a ‘buzz’ and instead clone themselves.

This is called ‘parthenogenesis’, which is a form of asexual reproduction, wherein embryos are developed without fertilisation by sperm. When this happens, the offspring do not create genetic diversity as they are literal clones of their parent. And they are reportedly even more efficient!
