Heart attacks: signs, symptoms and how to prevent them

Heart attacks: signs, symptoms and how to prevent them
Feb 9 2022 Share

Heart attack symptoms will vary between different individuals but it is of utmost importance to stay alert and watch out for the signs. The complications resulting from a heart attack may be very serious and even life-threatening, so if you feel any of the symptoms seek emergency help immediately.

On Valentine’s Day, which is also their 8th anniversary, The Marigold Foundation officially launched The Heart Disease Campaign, a 3-day campaign all about heart health. Whilst everyone is celebrating love and the symbol of the heart, The Marigold Foundation has applied that concept to bring awareness on heart diseases and their prevention. It also highlights the importance of being heart healthy, knowing the symptoms whilst realising how common heart attacks are.

In light of the ongoing campaign which is aimed at decreasing deaths at a young age, improving quality of life and increasing innovation; the following are some signs, symptoms and lifestyle habits to prevent heart attacks.

Symptoms (lasting for more than 15 minutes)

Being aware of the symptoms of a heart attack and seeking immediate help is not only essential but crucial. The sooner you get yourself to an emergency room, the sooner you can be treated to reduce heart muscle damage. In certain cases, a heart attack may require cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or defibrillation to get the heart pumping.

  • Burning or tightening pressure in the chest
  • An unexplained pain in the throat, neck, back, stomach or shoulders.
  • Unusual shortness of breath
  • A cold sweat

Lifestyle Habits for Heart Attack Prevention

A global lack of commitment to heart health has made heart disease one of the top causes of death around the world. Investing some time and effort into adopting a healthier lifestyle goes a long way and achieving a heart-healthy lifestyle isn’t too difficult. They say prevention is better than cure and the following are a few good habits you can adopt to prevent potential heart attacks.

  • Good Nutrition
  • Daily Physically Activity
  • Reduce Stress
  • Limit Alcohol
  • Lower High Blood Pressure

During The Foundation’s campaign launch in Valletta, cardiologist Dr. Robert Xuereb highlighted the fact that while COVID-19 took the lives of approximately 500 people in one year, heart attacks still claim the lives of over 1,000 people every year in Malta.

Opening just recently in Kalkara, A Mano describes itself as “a laid-back trattoria serving the most authentic Italian food, specialising in pizza and pasta”, and we can definitely vouch. Regardless of how fond you may be of pizza, you definitely cannot beat a slice of (or entire) sourdough pizza baked in a wood-fired oven. Top tip: try the Pizza Pistacchiosa, trust us.

This product that comes out of this Valletta pizzeria’s oven is a true testament to their love for the craft. SOTTO specialises in traditional Pinsa Romana topped with the freshest ingredients, a true slice of heaven. Don’t get it twisted, Salumeria is one of the coolest pizza places in Malta. Built on the owners’ passion for food and desire for reinvention, the guys over at Salumeria spare no expense when it comes to making their pizza and you could definitely tell by the test. This spot’s pizza is described as ‘a Neapolitan style pizza with some Roman traits,’ but don’t take our word for it, go and try it yourself!

Feb 9 2022 Share

The site plan of the Gozo area where the government is proposing a regional airport was tabled in parliament on Tuesday. A public consultation is expected to take place to receive feedback on the proposal.

Responding to a question in parliament by PN MP Chris Said, Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri said that the Xewkija heliport has not been operating since 2008 except for the occasional hospital airlift.

The technical experts engaged in the project were asked not to include the use of additional land used for agricultural purposes. They were also asked to ensure that the plan accommodates aircraft that can carry a maximum of 11 passengers and keep in mind the environmental impact of said airport.

The designs were not published by the Ministry, but he did state that they would be published in the coming weeks by the Gozo Development Authority. A site plan of the proposed area for the airport shows the airstrip extending more than the perimeter of the current airport, with the Minister explaining how the runway has to be developed to make space for fixed-wing aircraft.
