At the Ray of Hope Conference held under the guidance of President Myriam Spiteri Debono, Health Minister Jo Etienne Debono announced the successful completion of the fifth surgical intervention with the use of a robot. The conference gathered cancer patients and survivors, their families, and medical professionals.
This type of robotically assisted surgery, is reportedly less invasive and less painful for the patient.
In an video message to the conference, Jo Etienne Abela stated that a study on gullet cancer revealed that keyhole surgery provides the same outcomes as traditional surgery, but with less discomfort and a shorter recovery time.
At the conference, Shadow Minister for Health Adrian Delia, stated that there still is hope in the life for people who might have accepted that their conclusion is near, citing Jake Vella as an example of this.
Dr Gauden Galea, representative of the World Health Organisation, stated that whilst cancer cases in Europe are rising, death rates due to cancer are decreasing. He also praised the oncology services in Malta, especially the screening, stating that he is still alive due to these services.
President Myriam Spiteri Debono concluded the conference stating that due to advancing technologies cancers can now be easily identified and cured.
