Malta’s heads of state – Prime Minister Robert Abela and Opposition leader Bernard Grech – welcomed new president Myriam Spiteri Debono as she took her oath in the position.

Both wished the president all the best wishes for her term, after the parliament voted unanimously in favour of her appointment. This was the first time in Maltese history in which a president’s election required a two-thirds majority vote to be elected.

However, the unanimous vote also marked another milestone for Malta’s parliament as all members agreed on Myriam’s appointment as president.

Myriam has officially taken over the role from George Vella and has promised to focus on unity for her run as President of the Republic of Malta.
