Ħamrun Spartans Book Spot In League Final
May 6 2025 Share

Ħamrun Spartans booked their spot in the 360Sports Malta Premier League Championship Final with a dramatic 4-2 penalty shootout win over Floriana on Monday night at the National Stadium.

In front of thousands of passionate Ħamrun supporters, the match ended goalless after 120 tense minutes of football, with both sides unable to break the deadlock in regular or extra time. Floriana, winners of the Opening Round, and Ħamrun, second in the Closing Round, cancelled each other out in a tactical and physical battle.

But it was the Spartans who kept their cool when it mattered most, confidently converting four penalties while Floriana faltered with two misses. The Red and Blacks’ fans erupted in celebration as their side sealed a place in Saturday’s title decider.

On Sunday, Birkirkara booked their place in the final after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Sliema Wanderers. Brazilian striker Maxuell Maia was the hero, nodding in a last-gasp header from a Shaun Dimech free-kick deep into extra time.

All eyes now turn to Saturday, 10 May, when Ħamrun Spartans and Birkirkara face off at the National Stadium for the ultimate prize – the league title and a spot in European football. It marks the climax of the league’s first edition under its revamped format.

Before that, Floriana and Sliema will meet in the third-place playoff on Friday, 9 May, to determine the final European qualification slot.

With high stakes, roaring fanbases, and silverware on the line, Maltese football fans are in for a blockbuster weekend.

PN Leader Meets Prime Minister Over Conscience Vessel Case

PN Leader Meets Prime Minister Over Conscience Vessel Case
May 6 2025 Share

Opposition Leader Bernard Grech took to social media following an urgent meeting with Prime Minister Robert Abela regarding the vessel Conscience, currently located in territorial waters near Malta.

Grech said he received “all assurances” that the interests of the Maltese people and the country’s security are being safeguarded.

He emphasised that the well-being of the individuals aboard the ship was also being addressed, stating, “For us, every life matters,” and he was satisfied that guarantees were given regarding their health and safety.

Grech also addressed the issue in Parliament, where he thanked Malta’s law enforcement and all those involved in handling the situation.

He noted that “the national interest comes first and above all,” explaining that this principle guided the Opposition’s cautious approach.

The Nationalist Party refrained from public commentary on the matter until they had a clearer understanding of the facts.

The Opposition leader expressed appreciation to the Prime Minister for accepting his request for an urgent meeting, highlighting the importance of unity in such sensitive cases.

Grech concluded by condemning the alleged incident involving the vessel, stating, “We condemn this attack—if it is confirmed to have been an attack—regardless of who carried it out.”

Scouting Trip Turns Into Turtle Rescue Mission

Scouting Trip Turns Into Turtle Rescue Mission
May 6 2025 Share

Taking to social media over the weekend, NGO Żibel shared what happened when a scouting trip ended up becoming a turtle rescue mission.

The team was diving around Mġarr ix-Xini and Crystal Lagoon looking for ghost nets, when they came across a juvenile turtle on their way back.

The turtle was flapping its left flipper without touching the water and was not diving.

Concerned that something was wrong, the team brought the turtle – named Lil Zibz – to Wildlife Rescue Team Malta.

The team found algal growth on the left side of the caprice, indicating it has been floating lopsided at the water’s surface

Lil Zibz is now being cared for by a vet.

‘If you spot any wild animal in Malta injured or in danger, please call 9999 9505.’
