Minister Owen Bonnici Urges Action On Cultural Rights In The Mediterranean

Minister Owen Bonnici Urges Action On Cultural Rights In The Mediterranean

Minister for National Heritage, Arts, and Local Government Owen Bonnici highlighted the importance of cultural rights during the MED9 meeting, a coalition of nine Mediterranean and Southern EU states. He noted the growing pressures on cultural rights globally, including attempts to narrowly define culture and issues like conflicts, climate change, and pandemics, which impact the cultural sector.

Malta is working to advance cultural justice through a new project aimed at empowering people to engage with cultural issues critically while ensuring respect for others’ rights and freedoms. The Mediterranean region is particularly vulnerable to these challenges due to social currents driven by globalization and population movements.

To address these issues, Malta introduced the National Cultural Policy in 2021, which focuses on eight areas to promote cultural access. The policy seeks to foster social inclusion by creating community cultural spaces, enabling diverse communities to come together regardless of age, abilities, or background.

Minister Bonnici emphasized that MED9 serves as a crucial forum for reflection and transformative change, tackling both the challenges and opportunities facing cultural rights. He stressed that EU member states are well-positioned to address cultural rights issues given their understanding of societal impacts.

Clean Ups Across Malta For World Clean Up Day 2024

Clean Ups Across Malta For World Clean Up Day 2024

A series of clean-ups will be organised across Malta and Gozo as part of World Cleanup Day 2024, with 46 local councils benefiting from €65,000 in funding to support these activities.

This marks the second year of a financial scheme tied to the global initiative, which brings together millions of volunteers, governments, and organisations to tackle waste and promote a cleaner, more eco-friendly environment. World Cleanup Day 2024 will be celebrated on Friday, September 20.

The participating local councils will use the funds to organise clean-ups and waste collection activities in their communities throughout September.

The initiative aims to improve public spaces, including streets, gardens, beaches, and open areas.

Minister for National Heritage, Arts, and Local Government, Owen Bonnici, emphasised the significance of this effort, stating, “It sends a clear message about environmental responsibility and the importance of maintaining clean public spaces.”

Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government, Alison Zerafa Civelli, added that the project raises awareness of the need for cleanliness in public areas, noting that “a clean and healthy environment positively impacts human health and helps reduce illness.”

The initiative is designed to unite communities in promoting environmental change and to highlight the importance of maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
