Despite playing with a ten-man squad, Balzan emerged victorious with an exceptional showing in extra time against NK Domzale, with Andre Prates netting a heroic 94-minute goal.

The true drama came, however, during Gzira United’s match against Irish side Glentoran F.C., which saw a record-breaking 28-penalty shootout after a last-minute equaliser from Glentoran. The shootout did not only surpass the 2020/2021 shootout between Shamrock Rovers and Ilves to become European football’s longest ever, but made international headlines for one particular moment.

The point which caught Maltese fans, commentators and even Gzira United’s goalkeeper off guard was when Glentoran’s Jay Donnelly took a hopeful shot to keep the Irish side in the game. Despite initially catching the shot, Gzira goalkeeper David Cassar celebrated too early, all while the ball managed to make it into the net via rebound.

What do you make of this moment?

Local cyclist Fabio Spiteri took to Facebook to share a distressing video of his dogs struggling in the heat as Malta undergoes various power cuts.

In the video, one of his dogs, a pug, can be seen being comforted with wet towels to keep them cool in the blistering heat.

3 other dogs can also be seen trying to cool along with Fabio and his family as they enter into the 16th hour without any electricity.

Fabio described the penthouse walls as ‘burning’, going on to tag the Prime Minister and Energy Minister Miriam Dalli.

Various other localities in Malta are still experiencing power cuts for the third consecutive day, with some reporting well over 13 hours of no power.

A red ‘take action’ warning has been issued by the meteorological office, given that the maximum temperatures are set to reach a height of 41°C.

Temperatures are set to feel like 42°C, with this going up to 43°C by next Monday. The lowest temperature is set to be just about 28 to 29°C.

The warning urges people to seek cooler areas to protect oneself from the intense heat, wear sunscreen whenever possible and stay as hydrated as possible.

‘It-Temp Madwarna’ Facebook page uploaded an explainer infographic on how heat domes, the type of heat wave hitting the islands at this point in time, work.

Make sure to stay as safe as possible!
