Gutenberg Press, a leading printing and folding-carton manufacturer, has made the strategic decision to consolidate its operations at its second facility in Malta. Despite recent reports of a Planning Authority (PA) application filed by the company’s Founder and Managing Director, Frank Spiteri, to redevelop the Tarxien manufacturing facility into a retail complex, including a supermarket and other commercial spaces, Gutenberg Press remains committed to its operations in Malta.
Founded by Frank Spiteri in 1982, Gutenberg Press began its journey by undertaking small printing projects in a garage in Zabbar. Over the years, it has evolved into a key player in the local printing and manufacturing sector. In 1994, the company acquired land in Tarxien, where it established its headquarters and main production plant. Later, in 2008, it expanded its operations with a second production plant.
To meet the evolving market demands and streamline its operations, Gutenberg Press is consolidating all its activities at its second facility, which is currently undergoing expansion. The decision to redevelop the Tarxien site for retail purposes is part of the company’s strategic plan.
Despite the restructuring, Gutenberg Press assures that its business continuity remains intact. The expansion of the new facility is being executed in two phases to minimize downtime. The first phase involves the construction of half of the factory, while the second phase will focus on the installation of machinery and equipment.
Franco Portelli, Head of Business Development at Gutenberg Press, emphasized that the decision to consolidate operations aims to modernize the company, aligning it with current market trends and sustainability goals. With 70% of its business geared towards the export market, Gutenberg Press is determined to maintain its competitive edge on the international stage. Portelli also highlighted the company’s venture into the folding-carton business, which involves the production of bespoke branded packaging boxes. This venture has shown promise and will continue to receive investment and support from the company.
In summary, Gutenberg Press remains committed to its operations in Malta, with plans for expansion and modernization underway at its new facility. Despite the proposed retail development at the Tarxien site, the company is poised to strengthen its position in both the local and international markets, driven by innovation and strategic growth initiatives.
